haha i try not to get into these petty arguments |
yes it's my fault, i just confused both the D300 and D700.
But the rest is still true, Nikon is known for its flash system, while Canon is way ahead with its lense system. Nikon is always playing catch up to Canon with the bodies and has reduced the gap between both.
So to the original poster, if you plan to invest in lenses later, start with a great body like the 50D, to access the great lenses Canon has to offer.
I also have the Canon 24-70mm F2.8 L lense and its my favourite by far, but notice that you won't have a full frame with the 50D because of that 1.6 crop factor, in reality the lense becomes a 38-112mm which is way less intresting (the same applies to that D90 with its 1.5 crop factor).
If you plan on shooting landscape, a better choice is the 16-35mm F2.8 Lense, which becomes an intresting 25mm-56mm lense.

Just to drop my two cents...for the purposes you need this camera for, you really are going way over kill with your budget. I've taken amazing photos with my point and shoot (albeit things like sharpness/less noise/DOF will be greatly improved on an SLR)
Just as you listed your intentions, remember that unless you fully dedicate yourself to learning how to use your camera properly in full manual mode all the equipment in the world won't give you great photos. Take the time to read books: i recommend Understanding Exposure You'll learn a lot from this book. All you have to do is look at customer images from expensive lens on amazon to realize a lot of people have expensive gear and don't know how to use it. And for the recommendation, I recently saw someone selling a Canon 30D for $400 on Craigslist with 14000 actuations or something like that, a pretty good deal. With kids since you'll be doing handheld a lot, IS will definitely come in handy. If you've already got your mind made up you want to spend a lot on lens though, get something thats 18mm or even wider, because the 1.6 crop factor will make that 28.8mm giving you a decent wide angle, anything else and you won't be getting as close as you want.

totally agreed.
a used or lower tier dslr would do just fine in the situations that you need. lenses make more of a difference than the body. if you really have money to spend, get a 400-500 body and spend your $2000 on primes. in fact, get some L primes which are nice and fast. but again, if you have dough to spend, go for the big leauges.
ps. on the issue of canon vs nikon, i've been reading that alot of people, that includes a lot of professionals, are switching over to the dark side. apparently nikon has really stepped up it's game in terms of bodies and lenses.
