Well that's just not true. Maybe two years ago it was easier, and right now if you have two jobs that's cool but it's not the same for everyone, everywhere. I wasn't trying to justify stealing software or trying to say it's right, I was trying to give reasons as to why myself (and many many others, I'm sure) pirate software. It's wrong, I know that. A lot of things are wrong but people still do them, why is this any different?

You have to be persistent and willing to show an effort abotu getting the job, just submitting an app wont cut it from my experience.You need to go down and speak with the managers and request interviews and such.

Giving reasons is an attempt at justification. This isn't different in terms of the crime but its about having some sense of morality, just because people commit murder and rape doesn't mean you can also.

How are you going to find out this information? My feeling would be that once producers get to a certain level/ "get serious" about music production as opposed to it being a hobby, they'll support the industry, because they want the industry to survive and provide them with improved tools each year. If music is just a hobby, it'd be like "oh, the music companies are going bust, oh well. I'll take up something else, like painting or windsurfing or whatever".

Okay, that's an extreme example, and yes, I'm sure you could point to a few well-known producers who use a ton of pirated software. But could you point to "close to half the EDM producers that are currently releasing tracks"? I wouldn't think it's anywhere near half, in my experience.

Obviously, we all have limited experience. Some countries/ communities may be far more tolerant of piracy than others, so depending where you live your viewpoint may be different.

If you go to some third world countries...like one of which I'm originally from, they run business on piracy.
you could walk into a store and get the latest games, software for less than dollar. I'm pretty sure producers in those places use whatever the hell they can find on the net. I wouldn't complain either.

Exactley thats my point. Neither you nor I will ever know for sure, but it is quite possible with how easy it is to obtain pirated software these days.

More than half of all professional studios use pirated software.

If they also need to pirate some software to try it or to use it while they're saving, its really not a drama IMO. The benefits associated with buying software (support, upgrade paths, stability, updates) make it an attractive enough proposition that people will do it if theres any way they can.

It's not about how easy it is to obtain. The musicians and engineers I know are very net savvy, but we still choose to pay for the equipment and software we use. Every now and then I'll grab a torrent file to try out a piece of software. If it's good enough for me to use, I'll buy it. My rule is, before anyone else hears that software in one of my songs, the software has been paid for.
