Because it would sound like ass? Just speculating.

If you were spinning with a proggy like Traktor, it has a limiter on the master. If he's only clipping by a few db, I don't think it would sound like ass, maybe it would, maybe not. I'm just sayin, if it were me, and I was worried about clipping, I would put a limiter.

Well, I'm not really worried because wherever ableton starts to clip, I don't seem to be hitting it, despite the fact that I'm hitting up to 3 dB often enough.

I have read that ableton's got a high tolerance to clipping, so that might explain it...

Well, sorry, I should have elaborated a bit more, I was referring to OP, I know it doesn't answer his question, but, I thought, for him to get the levels right, for going into his mixer or whatever, so he could get the levels he wanted, without audible clipping.(for sure, without guessing is it audible),, Whatever, if I sound like a retard just nevermind this post. (i'm sleepy)

I'm actually mixing internally in live and then going into a mixer, which controls only my master volume. Basically, I've got the master turned to -2.5 and I leave it there. The master occasionally peaks around 3-4 dB and I'm wondering if thats going to create any audible distortion.

I don't know about ableton, but there is the possibility that there's a limiter on the master to avoid clipping. So even if the master peaks at 4 db, before it hits your soundcard the sound is limited to avoid clipping. If this is the case having it peak above 0 dB is a bad idea, because as stated elsewhere in the thread, limiting like that sounds like ass.

However I'm not an expert I'm just guessing based on my limited knowledge, so you might wanna not listen to me.

Why not try turning the level down rather than ruining the dynamics of your track?

LOL. I love how people think a limiter is the automatic cure for all their volume ills.

If Live had a built in limiter on the master I think it would be documented.

After testing it all out, I found that ableton's individual channels are unclippable. You can drive them however hard. The master channel will clip if you run it hard enough, but I'm not sure when it starts.

probably. But if it peaks at above 0 dB and there is no audible clipping when he plays it through the setup, I don't know how else you would explain it.

But then, I don't know anything so I should probably sthu.
