you may not care, but by announcing my decision publicly (even if it is to a bunch of mostly strangers) i feel it will be easier for me to stick to it.
i've never been a heavy smoker (apart from when i'm drinking/partying) but cigarettes have definitely become more a part of my life than i would like them to be. i started out only smoking when i was at bars or parties, then it progressed to smoking after meals and during breaks at work, and smoking whenever i have a Red Bull or whenever i'm in the car for more than 30 minutes. they're totally a clutch for me when i'm stressing or having a shitty day... but i don't want that anymore. i'm beginning to realize i'm not young and invincible anymore, and i want to make healthier decisions and not totally fuck up my body.
i don't plan on quitting entirely - i can still justify a few cigarettes here and there when i'm drinking, out at parties, etc... special occasion smoking, basically. i've never actually felt addicted to the actual cigarette, more just the act of smoking. i have gone days without smoking so i don't think it will be hard for me. i figure if i don't buy them then i won't smoke them.
any tips/suggestions/stories from anyone who has successfully quit? |
you should just quit. i was exactly like you. same reasons for smoking and the same gradual progression into full blown smoking when stressed, driving, etc... and i just quit one day. smoking gives you premature wrinkles and the sooner you quit, the better. and let's not forget all the other health problems you develop from smoking...including cancer.
i'm at the point where if someone lights up around me, i get really annoyed and don't want to smell like an ashtray. i mean if i'm out and partying and someone lights up, whatever. but in my every day life when i'm sober, i don't like being around smokers. it's gross and makes my nose stuffed.
are you at the point where you light up a cigarette and after the first couple off puffs you think, "ughh this is gross i dont even enjoy them any more" ??
if so, then you can definitely quit right now. it's all mental. you're strong. you can do it myra!

so you meant to say: I haven't smoked today yet |
i smoked maybe 4 cigarettes on Sunday, 1 on Monday... and none since then. i don't even miss it.
i know i won't crave one until i eat a gigantic plate of nachos and wash them down with some Dos Equis amber this Friday. that's when the true quitting test comes.

Anyway If I can recommend anything to you... start jogging if you don't already.. |
yeah, that's definitely part of my plan. i jogged/walked 2 miles last night when i got home and it felt so good.
i've been in a funk lately (and not the good kind of funk)... always tired, groggy, overworked, anxious. i'm not depressed about anything, i just spend way too much time at work in front of the computer. forcing myself to be creative 7 days a week is mentally draining and taking its toll on me. no matter how much sleep i get, i always feel like i need more.
it's been going on for a while but the last few weeks have been especially bad, so i decided to take better care of myself to see if it has a profound effect. this includes quitting smoking, getting more exercise, drinking less, eating healthier, etc.

i don't necessarily think they're gross, but i don't really enjoy them all the time either. like i said before, it's more the act of smoking that i enjoy rather than the actual cigarette.
i'm not even really thinking of it in terms of "quitting smoking"... i'm looking at it like "i'm going to quit buying cigarettes" or "i'm going to use the money i would have spent on cigarettes this month to buy something useful and good for me" - in my mind it seems like such a simple solution when i state it like that.
thanks for the encouragement, everyone.
