Sorry for the delay but I was waiting on the ok from Sean to post the answer to the first question below out of respect for his privacy. It was told to me in person and I wasn't sure if it was public knowledge.
I didn't get to ask all your questions but I did ask most of them:
************************************************************
Q. Ask if Seven Weeks actually took Seven Weeks to do and if that's where the name came from.
A. My daughter was 7 weeks old in the womb when the track was finalized
Q. What synth did he and Simon Patterson use for the massive after-breakdown bassline in Something's Up ?? Be sure to ask him that one ...
A. Predator
Q. How many tracks has he made as a producer? What other genres has he produced besides trance?
A. I guess just refer to discogs.com on that one. I did other stuff besides trance when in NY but it was total horseshit.
Q. How did he develop the Sean Tyas(TM) sound and how long did it take him to find that style?
A. I've always been after capturing that classic PvD feel . How a track drops in with kick and bass in a club. So once I finally got it right (it took years), I stuck with it.
Q. Did he have any musical training before?
A. Zero, I wish. I went to school to be an animator.
Q. How long on average does it take to produce a track?
A. 4 days to months. Depends on a million factors.
Q. How many tracks does he start compared to how many does he start and actually finish?
A. Probably 50%.

Some random notes over the course of the session that I thought might be of interest:
The room Sean presented in was small so it was packed with about 25 people. We learned it was the first time Sean had ever done anything like this before. Sean's favorite synth, software or hardware, is the ES2. He uses it for almost everything in his tracks. It is worthy to note Sean always programs his own patches from scratch. I was personally amazed when someone in the class asked him about a type of sound and within 15 seconds of twisting knobs in ES2 from a init patch, he had the sound.
Sean stresses to never use your actual kick as your sidechain trigger. Rather he says to either use a closed hi-hat, or just the click from the very beginning of your kick. That is all you should ever be using.
Up until a year and a half ago when Sean bought a Virus Ti, he was software only. He has had nothing but problems with his Ti so far and is very frustrated with it. Sean and others that use the Ti on a Mac have a problem where no more than 3 notes can be played at a time. I personally don't have this problem using the Ti on a PC as he said it seems to only plauge Mac users. He said Access is aware of the problem and they hope to fix it soon.
A little interesting background on how Sean started out...
Sean got his start when he was offered a job at a studio in Germany after the owner of the studio came upon samples of Sean's tracks on Trance.nu. At this point in his life he was delivering pizzas for a living. He took the job and moved overseas and worked for a while writing tracks and doing remixes for DJ Beam. After some time Sean went his own way and the rest is history. It is also interesting to note that Sean graduated college with an art degree in animation, hoping to possibly animate for Disney.
In closing and on a more personal note, I must say that Sean is a rare soul for whom I have the utmost respect. He is as kind and genuine of a person as he is talented. Sean was very tired when he landed in Seattle but still came straight to this Logic session and presented for 2 hours, freely giving away many of his secrets. In fact Sean joked that he hoped everyone would forget everything he had shown and that he would now have to work extra hard to come up with new techniques. I'm not sure what other producers on Sean's level, if any, would ever do something like this. What an amazing and unselfish individual and I'm truly grateful for having had the opportunity to know him. |
Dude is a God, big respect for him! Trance master for sure.
