I've picked up somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 hitchers; never had any bad experiences.

I used to hitch hike alot when i was younger. I spent a few summers working in algonqin park and with no car that was the only way for me to get into town on days off. never had any bad experiences. Got picked up by a group of beatnicks in a vw hippy van one time and hot boxed the van from huntsville all the way to cache lake.

admittedly i dont usually pick up hitchhikers tho, occasionally i will but usually only if i have a friend in the car with me.

Yeah, I’d like to know what horrible, scarring incident in your childhood turned you into such an ignorant, intellectual-hating philistine?

What was that movie, where a guy stops for a couple of hitchhikers, directs them to throw their backpacks in the trunk/cab, then peels out with their gear before they could open the door to get in?

It was crazy back in the 60s and 70s in the US, my parents have dozens of stories, as well as many other older people I know about hitchhiking all over the place... My mom used to hitchhike the 70 mile stretch from Portland to Hood River all the time when she was in college. My dad hitchhiked all over the state when he was in high school and college. Back then it was really common and there wasnt a lot of fear about being attacked or anything like that.

It wasnt even that they were poor either... it was just an accepted method of getting places. You'd take a bus or a train someplace and if the line didnt get you close enough to your destination you'd start walking and hitch a ride.

I dont think I'd ever do that now...

I used to hitchhike to work whenever it rained/snowed during high school. The place I worked was straight down this road (20 minute walk) near my house. I think I did this like about 15-20 times.

Never had any bad experiences, though this one dude in a green Mazda minivan with a baby in the backseat turned the corner where he was supposed to stop and then insisted that he would turn around. I got a little too paranoid cos he drove for what felt like forever and jumped out of the car as soon as we hit the next stop light. I then had to walk like 20 minutes in the snow anyway

don't think so - but it was dark out; and all i saw was a red car along the side of the road as i drove past it. the two guys were a few miles down the road. said they just ran out of gas.
