I was doing business studies today, and we are doing about different types of groups.
And we wrote some notes, and i thought they would show exactly why we have a problem in this forum:
| quote: | Norms: the standard against which the appropriatness of a behaviour is judged.
Norms arrive from the combenation of members personalities and caracteristics, the situation, the task and the historical tradiotion of the group. Lack of conformity can lead to physical and verbal abuse, threats or rejections from the group. Norms serve 4 purposes
1. Help the group to survive, group tend to reject deviant behaviour that does not CONTRIBUTE to the accompleshing group goals
2. Simplify and make more predictable the behaviours expected of group members. Analysis of behaviours is therefore not needed before deciding a response
3. Help the group avoid embarresing situations
4. Express the central values of the group and identify the group to others |
Now that is just point of 4 that business use to increase motivation and productivity.
This shows exactly what happens in this forum. People are expected to follow norms, and follow things which are considered unwritten rules on the forum.
So some members dont follow the rules, and are different, and the group reject these people, leading to on this forum verbal abuse. Somethign that happens in any group, be it friends, or work.
So members try and be different and stur up tension in the group, which leads to us flmaing them, this is a natural response. Eventually if the members dont conform to the norms they will be rejected, and ejjected from the forum
So if you study sociology and business studies, and economics like me, you have to learn about this kinda stuff.
So before anyone shoots there mouth off, look at proven facts.
If you analyse some members you see they do what they do to get noticed, or try and be different, for exactly this reason, to be flamed, and get attention. You cant argue with facts.
So they only way to deal with the problem is to ejject certain members from the forum. if they dont conform to norms and rules they will be ejjected, simple as that
Hope you like my analysis, and when somebody calls me stupid, or tells me i dont no what i am talkin about, i have to learn about this kinda stuff day in and day out. And i feel i understand as a whole how people work.
So before you judge me, look at what you are posting, because i am constantly analysing members, it helps me understand these theries at school, and means i can relate them to this forum
So i hope you understand what im getting at. If you dont realise there are norms here, and dont follow them, expect abuse from others, its a natural reaction
Oh and you may see this as elitiet, but i think people get confused with elitest and experienced, i and others have seen a lot on the forums, i almost live here. And we know the out comes of these little flames, etc
So i would say it is more experience than elitism, but all newbies will learn the unwritten rules, and norms
This is the real world basically, the net isnt just a place where you can make up someone, because i can tell you know, this forum is so big, you will meet people from it, like me and the huge UKTA meetups
So happy posting, hope you understand this, and it explains to you how the problem had arissen and how it can be solved
