Okay, but let's just go on that thought, and say you have to pay a total of $100 round-trip more for flying. You again have 12x more travel time each way. So, you are spending a whole day extra just in travel time. If you equate time with money, you aren't saving.

Also, I value the time with my friends in various places over a 12hr train ride any day.

forgot about the california shuttle bus, it's as cheap as $25 each way SF - LA, but it also takes about 12 hrs.

Nah, but I don't find Amtrak to be effective if you are going from Southern California to Northern California. You have to switch between a bus and a train and take 12hrs to get there. Not worth it imho.
