I would go with Stu's advice on this one.
By the sounds of things the promoter actually probably knows that he put your nose out of joing but sometimes being a promoter can be equally tough.
Sometimes what happens is that many DJs like to do two gigs per night, i.e. will only take the booking if they can get something else that's within a reasonable travel distance. This may not have been the case here and the headliner might have stated that this needed to be worth his while to come in the first place.
The amount of times I have had sets cut short before the event or ended up not playing at all is a fair old few, less in later years but when you are new to a scene you get the crap end of the stick sometimes.
People generally are paying to see the headliner, and as long as people feel that they got their money's worth then you have done your job and he has done his.
There is also the angle that the promoter cut the other guy out altogether in order to let you down as little as possible due to the amount of work you put in.
Some headliners can be a nightmare to work with too, but that's another story.
