Ive liked classical music ever since i got involved in orchestra back in elementry school. Nothing is more "old-skool" than that stuff.

I remember when i was 16 i used to blast it from my car speakers. . . funny as hell having everyone turn and look at me when i drove by with Brahms violin concerto blaring

Personal favorites: FF6, Secret of Mana, Super Mario RPG, F-Zero (verrrry trancy) Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2. Download 'em!

Final Fantasy 7's soundtrack was amazing. Much more character than 8 or 9. The best song is probably Aries' theme, although I do like Breezy from FF8.

I'm a HUGE fan of classical music. I see that some of the the TA's are into gaming soundtracks. I'm not much of a gamer so here are some of my picks of some good classical music that is very accessible and a good place to start.

Piano Music
Chopin - Nocturnes (any of them)
Beethoven - Piano Concerto #5, Mvt.2
Beethoven - "Pathetique" Sonata in Cmin
Bach - Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould Recordings)
Ravel - All his piano music is great
Debussy - Listen to his nocturnes (very dreamlike piano music)

Orchestral (too many to list but here are a few highlights)
Gustav Mahler - Symphony #2 "The Ressurection", Mvt.5
Gustav Mahler - Symphony #5 "Adagietto", Mvt. 4
Tchaikovsky - Symphony #5, Mvt.2
Tchaikovsky - Symphony #6, The whole thing (especially Mvt.1)
Ravel - Anything by this man but a good place to start is "Bolero" and his "Pavane"
Faure - Pavane
Wagner - His opera overtures are quite famous. Some great one's to
listen to are "Tritan and Isolde" and "Tannhauser"

Vocal (definitely too much to list so here is a VERY short list)
Shubert - Ave Maria
J.S Bach and Gounod - Ave Maria
Mozart - Laudate Dominum

Listen to artist like Cecilia Bartolli and Cheryl Studer for good recordings for singers.

For good orchestral recordings, anything on the Deutshe Grammophon label or the London Decca label is good.

For piano music some names to watch out for when choosing a recording are Christian Zimmerman, Martha Argerich, Vladmir Ashkenazy, Arthur Rubenstein.

Two words for ya. Aaron FUCKING Copland. This guy is a 20th century composer who has done amazing amazing pieces of work. I also love Dvorak (new world symphony=sex) and Holst (I play the trombone as well). Also can't go wrong with most of Beethoven's symphonies.
