Sonic is badass...dreamcast had bad timing and couldnt compete with PS2 and thats the only reason it went downhill. I took this from wiki = on October 21, 2008, Sonic was voted the most popular video game character in the UK with a 24% vote while his old rival Mario came second with 21% of the vote. Then in late 2008, MSN held a poll of who's the most iconic video game character, Sonic was ranked #1 as the most iconic video game character of all in gaming while Mario and Lara Croft were voted less in second and in third respectively.
BTW is you actually look into each Sonic game that was released for other systems other than Sega Genesis you would see that they were very popular and well received. |
Ya, in the UK, Sonic SHOULD be more popular, since the Genesis was a more popular machine. But we aren't talking about popularity, we're talking about game quality. If we WERE talking about popularity, then the character leading the way is Link, not Mario OR Sonic.
When comes down to quality, Sonic lacks, every time. Once you've blasted through half a level using a spring-board, it gets incredibly frustrating trying to control him through the rest of the level. Remember trying to jump on a hill? You'd go backwards and shit.
And no, Sonic games released since the DC have not done well. Nor have the games been any good. Sonic and the Secret Rings (for Wii) is probably the best release since Sonic and Knuckles, and it's nothing more than a rail-shooter with no shooting.
EDIT: Read this.

You can skip right to the summary for the key sentence I want you to read... actually, I'll just copy/paste it for you.

These lists inevitably represent a whole host of different agendas, outlooks, and opinions on what constitutes a "great" video game. Some placed a great emphasis on recognizing games that were historically "relevant" or "innovative" while others simply celebrated games that were fun to play.
The fact that PC games have such a high total overall is largely an indication that there is not much consensus over which PC games are best. Despite their groundbreaking work in many genres, in the end it seems that PC games have been unable to really capture the public's imagination in the same way console games have.
If we are to name a "golden era" of gaming, it appears to be the mid-to-late 90's. The early arcade / PC era of the 80's has apparently been largely forgotten, and few post-1999 games appear to have left much of an impact. Nintendo Power's 1997 list, though now almost ten years old, thus stands up well today, as the classics it recognized still remain amongst the most contemporarily popular.
Other thoughts:
- Action games tend to be the most popular genre.
- Sonic the Hedgehog is not popular. In fact, Sega in general has not left much of a legacy, with no Genesis games making anyone's lists.
- Tetris is the only puzzle game anyone seems to care about.
- The most popular video game character of all time is clearly Link, closely followed by Mario.
- Despite being the famed "first video game ever" Pong has not aged well, and today no one seems to consider it relevant. Pac Man and Space Invaders are also surprisingly unpopular. |

These forces are supposed to combine to create Captain Planet?
Bullshit.
Those forces combine to create a soaking, boiling mudstorm on Valentine's Day.
