Most of the math i learned at uni was on my own...not that the teachers were useless (only one of them was that was, staring into a blank wall was immensely more interesting than listening to her lectures), but most of the math lessons were held at 7am (and those with the boring teacher on mondays which made it even worse!) so it was either go to math class or walk 50 metres farther and have a nice cup of coffee in a bar. Most of the time the choice that was made was to walk a few extra seconds and enjoy coffee for the next hour and a half while the rest were tortured with some boring math proofs

i'm the same. always had AP & honors english in HS and even got placed in english honors in 2 different college placement exams but i always scored really low in math and needed tutors. it's annoying sometimes but i dunno i guess my brain just isn't wired to be good at alegbra. i'm good with accounting math but then my OCD kicks in and i check my work at least 3 times lol

i could call my dad right now with a high school or college level algebra equation/problem and he would get it done in a minute. wish i got my brains from him.

there's actual learning disabilities that are aimed at strictly people who struggle with math.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dyscalculia

i think with enough practice though, u can eventually become at least "ok" with it, but it just depends on how important it is to you and/or if you truly need it a lot in your career/life.

*edit* go to barnes & noble and look for books that help with algebra. i have a book somewhere that really breaks it down for you like you're in 8th grade and it helped me get through a couple of college algebra classes. i'll try to find it tomorrow and post the title/author.

Anyways, I don't have much sympathy for people who are smart, but terrible at math. If you can understand simple logic, and basic algebra rules, you can do calculus. I took Calc 1-3, Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics, and Linear Algebra, and got a C in every single one except discrete and linear, I got a C+ in those Just study, do your homework, make sure it's right, then try your best on the tests.

I know quite a few intelligent people who are shit at maths and I think it's because they were never taught properly. I think it's a travesty that so many maths teachers teach their kids to rote learn processes, formulae and rules without teaching them to understand the mathematics (which would make most of the rote work redundant). I think if a naturally intelligent person isn't taught to understand mathematics as a system for representing logic early on then they see it as a bunch of arbitrary rules you have to memorise and get discouraged.

Nou let me know if that link I provided is any good.

this book has changed my life.

http://www.gap-system.org/~history/..._preface_1.html

I was never great at math in high school, but with little effort everything is possible. I've got an itch for quantum computing, entlanglement in QM and some fields related to A.I ...god i f0495ing love this shiz.

enroll in a community college and follow a sequence (pre-algebra/college algebra/pre-cal/cal 1-3)...and so on. Stick to it! And good luck

p.s: for dummies books can be quite good too. stick to it!

Think of Math as a game. Know the rules and practice. Everything will thus fall into place.

The beauty of Math is that you have an opportunity to ALWAYS be right, because it's all fixed by certain rules/formulas; and because, usually, you can check your work. Well, I'm at the Trig level right now; and that mentality has helped me keep solid A's.
