It certainly made my problems with established religions greater. As you imply, the idea the entire universe was designed for us seems ludicrous when placed against the sheer dimensions of the thing.
However, it definitely instilled a realisation that humanity is such a small speck of dust floating in the giddying depths of nothing that to pretend to understand existence is just arrogance. There could be realms of existence we'll never know, simply on a scale beyond our reach or comprehension.
Indeed, but to what extent would it be fair to say these realms of existence may be inhabited by anything that happens to be godlike? If not, I don't see why it would make sense to ditch atheism.
(Sorry if I sound preachy, but I didn't quite understand the leap you took)

I don't know. That's the point. Previously, I was happy with the conclusion that no creator could exist in the physical universe, and there was no evidence nor compelling reason to believe in any metaphysical dimension. Now I'm perfectly prepared to believe there are entirely physical dimensions beyond our comprehension, and what they house is a mystery that'll probably never be solved.
It doesn't make any real impact on my attitudes towards life or religion: I still don't believe in any religion, I still think all existing religions are nonsense and I still live my life under my own moral outlook as if there is no afterlife or higher power. Despite what Halcyon may imply, I don't pull any punches in my approach to religious debate.
The only real change is I now regard hard atheism as the same kind of human arrogance as religion: both think they have the answer.
it makes you think that there must be other life out there

The scientific position is that the default answer is that nothing exists, until there is positive proof that it does. This doesn't mean that it actually doesn't exist or that no one will ever prove that it does, just that it is most logical to behave in a way consistent with a world in which it does not exist.
