Big ups to MADE for finally bringing a music festival of this scale. Personally I feel I did not appreciate it as much as I should have (but thats just where I am in my life right now). I could totally imagine being absolutely enthused and THRILLED back in 2005/6 to have a multiday festival finally come here (I remember being completely wowed and swept away by Ultra/WMC and the amazing vibe in SoBE when I went down there in 2005). Drew and I were a bit underwhelmed for most of the day. But before I sound like I'm totally ragging on it, we did realize how much organization this took to bring together something of this magnitude...and how great it was for NYC to finally have a music festival to call its own. It was also a great way to spend a nice day, although it did get severely cloudy during the latter part of the day.
We ended up parking at Astoria, and upon finding the pedestrian entrance to the walkway of the Triboro, proceeded to walk across it. Not bad at all, took 30 minutes, the view was great, and ended up at the gates at around 1pm. Headed into the Riverside stage where Jason was spinning, not up to his usual bpms but still really good. Crowd reaction was favorable As Jerome came on, we decided to walk around to explore the rest of the area, ran into Z and other ppl. She told us Menno was in back of the Riverstage tent and we could probably talk to him if we could get around the fence. But no need for that, we just walked over, We saw him chatting with two ppl inside of the fenced off area. Drew waved to him, he sees him, waves back and actually starts walking toward the fence where we were. I was starstruck for a second when I realized this (ahh so silly). Niiice. A very nice exchange for about 10-15 minutes or so. Really great. Couldn't have asked for anything more
Yea, his set was also pretty good -- loved Southern Sun as well as many other great tunes. Awesome for a 2:30-4:00pm slot. His standing on the decks toward the middle/end of his set was NOT to be missed -- imagine a 6'8 ft guy just towering over everyone. Great big smile. Great roar from the crowd. He is soo amazing and fan-friendly
Went over to the Audion tent at Sunday School Hilltop for the TA meetup. As I understand it, it was definitely more successful today than yesterday. Definitely met quite a number of TAs I hadn't met before, met up with my DC/VA friends, and it was just a nice reunion with everyone <3 Especially great to see Swamper again, and to see Natalie (tatgirl) formerly of TOTA but now in DC/VA. Audion definitely had some sick beats going, from what I could hear of it.
The period between Angello till the end of Markus was somewhat of a fail, as Drew and I needed to hit up the ATM...well wouldn't u know it...3 out of the 4 atms provided decided to break down. so there was this ILL line...omg I think we must have heard 3/4 of Markus's set from that area from 6pm on (thank goodness the sound was that good even at that distance. I would have to say we werent too crazy with what Markus started out with. I think at one point we caught vocals and Drew and I looked at each other, like uhh ok that sounds weird. But his buildup got better within the last half hour). hehe Kerrine just happened to wander over, in need of money too, so we let her wait with us in line, Zack and Frank were around and came over to chat once in awhile, eheh. And that pretty much made the time more enjoyable, hehe. Yea we were pretty much there for an hour and change. eesh
With nightfall, I dunno, I feel like everything was turned up a few notches...I guess the lights probably had a lot to do with it. We were at Ferry. I loved it that he began with "Gabriella's Sky", one of my favorite tunes from "Twice in a Blue Moon." The left speaker suddenly came on, making the sound louder/more balanced, and the crowd cheered. The rest of his set...all predictable songs (LEF, Beautiful, etc.) but hell I still love Ferry though I actually met these two really cool ppl from Texas during that set who gave me their contact information and said to keep in touch in the event I ever was in Texas (go figure ) but hey, they are Ferry fans, we had had a great time chatting it up, and it just added to the great vibe during that set
Decided to leave Ferry early cuz just wanted to chill for a lil bit before Hawtin...but somehow ended up in the Holden tent...and let me tell you, he was throwing DOWN!!! Holden in my experience has been 50-50 at best...he does tend to get a bit too ambient/experimental for my taste. But yeah, the lasers and lights were totally in sync with his banging set, and Drew and I found ourselves dancing energetically. Loved it.
We basically closed out the day with Hawtin/ATB...our legs were spent by that time, so we just sat/lay down in the grass to the right of the Sunday School tent. It was soo refreshing to do so...and Hawtin just sounded AMAZING from the getgo i couldn't believe how great he sounded. Then I got a text from a firend I was supposed to meet up, thats what made me get up, Drew also, and then he suggested we go check out ATB. So thats how we ended up closing at ATB...admittedly the lasers and music were really good. Wasn't feeling "One More Time" really (umm shouldn't that be played at Guetta? LOL -- way too mainstream for me and that almost ruined it for me.) But he finished up nicely so I can't complain.
A good day overall, with the sets getting better and better as the night progressed. Loved the buses outside of Sunday School, especially after dark, with the lights flashing on the interior. I was drawn to them...heehee. I almost wish each tent/area had its own "theme", that would have been very cool.
I'd definitely like to see how next years compares with this one.

Wow, what an event....
I saw Guy Gerber (amazing closing track), Audion (crack), Josh Gabriel (surprisingly very good), Steve Angello, Markus Schulz, Desyn Masiello (wtf!!!!!!!!!!), Tom Middleton (more dnb toward the end, awesome), Hot Chip, Ferry Corsten, Victor Calderone (more crack), David Guetta, and ATB!

Wow, what an unexpected day. Day one was great, but day two! Ferry bored me to tears, Markus was awesome, Guetta knocked my socks off.
Thanks to all (Erica, Sameer, Jay, Polly, Wai) who texted me when my favorite pop whore song When Love Takes Over came on. I am so grateful that you support my terrible taste. |
I know you'd do the same for me as well my dear
Markus -- just caught the last 30 minutes of his set and he rocked it.
Ferry -- yawn-fest, sadly.
Guetta -- total revelation, loved every minute of his set; yes, I too am a pop whore.
Great seeing everyone last night!
PS: Yay, no lines for the bathroom! Why can't we get more portapotties at PVD in the Park??

red carpet sounded like a mashup with kings of tomorrow or something similar, not sure though
Day 2:
Got there just as jerome was finishing up...and then MENNO! Southern Sun! Jumped on the CDJ! Needless to say, awesome.
And then Angello. Saw him last year and he killed it, and he brought it again. LOVED the back and forth with Be / Show Me Love / Satisfaction, almost thought for a minute there he was just going to leave it at Be and Satisfaction...and then he drops the Show Me Love.
Markus...now, I have to admit, if I hadn't heard Menno I would have loved it, but he played a bunch of same tracks that Menno played. Still solid set.
FERRY! We Belong! Beautiful! Rock your Body Rock end! Awesome set.
Like (everyone) else, I left Guetta but went to LCD Soundsystem not ATB :O. They were awesome, great way to end the night, only complaint I'd have is that there weren't enough people in that tent to experience it
Afterparty @ Love: Marcus just destroyed it. There's nothing more that can be said other than that. Oh, and Menno was there!
