I don't really know anything about FM synthesis but I have a Korg electribe (er-1) that basically functions as a percussion based analog synth. I can't see much practical application for these kinds of sounds outside of glitchy minimal techno. I just use it for the high-hat, which is a sample.

Anyway I'm guessing the electribe has a much better interface for this kind of thing. You can probably pick one up really cheap.

now and again i'll synthesis my kick' but for hat's and percs i just use samples i'm not very good at making percussions from scratch.

Getting a bit better. I linked velocity to some of the operators so it changes the character of the sound.
