Re public transport I must be spoiled, coming from Vienna. There the stations are cleaner than hospitals and the trains come always precisely on time, although there are no subways between 1 and 5, unfortunately. The people are indeed friendly, I didn't know if that was necessarily a New Yorker characteristic or something typical American. Overall I'm having a great time, mind you. I must have come with way too unrealistic expectations. After all it's just another (although immensely diverse) big city, not the 'paradise' I (for unclear reasons) had in mind.

Oh, and the Apple store - pure insanity.

I got the Zagat iPhone App, should make things easier. I did go to some fantastic restaurants, there aren't too many really good ones in my area though (Northern UWS).

It's true about the research, but a bit tough when you're covered with work during the week and have only the weekend to go out and actually explore. As for EDM scene, I seem to be clueless, cause other than the ZOO Festival and some events at Webster Hall/Pacha I haven't discovered too many events. Regular clubs are really problematic if you go as a group. Either insanely expensive (that is, if you do the table thing) or a sheer lottery (even when making sure you're adhering to the required boy/girl ratio).

well for events it depends what you're into. trance is mostly going to be at clubs, but if you're cool with house and techno you can find some really amazing warehouse/loft parties in Brooklyn which tend to be a lot more affordable and way more laid back... if you're okay with venturing outside Manhattan.
