Until the batteries on the phone run out that is...but then i just swith to th audio version on the ipod

still had to knock down a few trees to build the plant that makes the ebook stuff. and then of course you have to power the plant/factory too; so in reality, you're cutting down trees and making pollution.

Most of these devices are built in already built factories. Rarely is a whole new plant built just to manufacture a single electronic device.

I am 99% positive that the kindle is built in a factory that already existed.

I've been following the whole ereader thing for a while and I must say the Nook looks the best so far. The one problem with e-ink is that it takes a while to change image (a couple of seconds) this is tolerable for page turning, but I can see it getting really annoying for navigating menus and browsing your collection etc.. this is why the Nooks second capacitive lcd screen is so ingenious... Also it runs on android which I suspect will be hackable.

In general though this is a market that's only going to become more competitive over the next couple of years so we'll probably see a whole lot of improvements in both technology and implementation.

all the newer e-books are very easy on the eyes, certainly no worse than reading a paper copy. As for batteries, they will last a hell of a long time, the only time they draw power is when turning a page.

still waiting to see how the publishers handle all of this. the immediate win for consumers should be the out of copyright stuff. the rest is proving an industry battle, with different reades and stores trying to push their own formats. Add to this the very same region restrictions that annoy us with music.

As for costs - don't expect them to be much cheaper than a paper copy. Overal costs for a book, printing is a very minor component, though warehousing is a little more. A lot of publishers systems are set to throw away mint copy returns of many titles as it's cheaper to print a new one than to pay someone to put the unit back to the shelf.
Current thinking i about 80% of the paper copy - but then there's things like trade copy vs paperback. When we release trade copy that costs maybe 30% more - is the e-book going to cost 30% more untilt he paperback copy is released, even though e-copy is identical ?

If Kindle installs a peephole function I will buy it. Stat.
