Also... as much as I know that being afraid of a little spider a million times smaller than me is stupid and irrational, I cannot control it. It doesn't help to know that they can't kill me etc. etc. I am still terrified of it.

Fear is a natural response, fight or flight. It's an evolutionary defense mechanism.

Now if you are referring to something other than the natural response, (perhaps cultivated fear that people don't outwardly have fearful reactions toward eg. hell), then you have a different discussion.

1.fear of noise

2.Fear of falling

so yes it can be defeated with knowledge
