Basics of sound people: the sine wave is the most pure form of sound there is. It's plays on just one exact frequency and no other. None of the other waveforms play on one frequency only as they contain harmonics. The sine wave has no harmonics thus is the purest form of sound. A pure sine can not be `cleaned up`.

In physics, any other sound than the sine is considered to be a combination of sine waves that ultimately looks like a square/pulse or saw waveform.

Do all VST's run the same exact algorithims? Are all VST's filters made equal? LFOs, Modulators? To my ears, A sub bass sound based on a sine waves through FM7 sounds different than sub bass based on sine waves through Crystal, I can see a difference in how clean or rich the sound is between the two. And that goes for a few more VSTs. Depends on how closely your listening of course.

So the people talking about "sine wave = pure", which is true, but they are neglecting that VSTs impart their own character to a sound.

I know exactly what he is talking about when he says cleaner, I've been trying to achieve the same thing with little success. By clean he means more defined, tighter. More pronounced, yet still subby. It's a bass you hear in alot of techhouse these days. The thing is (for me at least) is it really has nothing to do with mixing, because even soloed the subby bass I try to get sounds undefined, sloppy if you will. But yeah examples would be great.

Its probably a aquare wave filtered down with a low pass filter and a snappy attack. Also try combining a bit of white noise in the attack for some snap. A basic sine wave will sound very subby but also quite loose, so try adding some higher frequencies to make it cut through more.

Thank you for explaining it better. But ya i understand a sine is a pure wave form but i want to make it tighter. As in its subtle but tite. So its not overpowering but enough. Basically like the sub bass/sine used in orange glow by glenn morrison. It's bascially throughout the whole song. But also how could you give it a higher frequency to make it a little more noticeable when playing on speakers without a subwoofer?

OK, listened to example and that isn't what I had in mind so disregard my post. That was way to subby.
