Actually, I am writing a paper on the topic and I have already pretty much finished my thesis, but I was curious to know what people had to say. TA is a pretty diverse sampling and I thought it might help me see something I am missing, or perhaps fortify my own argument.

As I said, it depends entirely on the moral assumptions of the person I'm arguing with. People think eating meat is immoral for several different reasons. The main distinction is whether it's about pain and suffering or simply taking lives. After that it's about how they quantify the value of life, and so on.

What my argument comes down to is that it's impossible to avoid killing animals to survive. As such, vegetarianism is essentially an exercise in futility.

In other words, are you trying to say that there isn't enough non-meat food supplies to feed the entire planet? That in order to survive we must eat meat so as to have enough food to go around?

This isn't an argument to point out why vegans are stupid/wrong/whatever, it's simply "why do you eat meat?" Beyond the 'it tastes good' response, what does it come down to?
