The main cause of hang-overs (the side effects of alcohol that is) are 3 main things:
Dehydration, lowered blood sugar & your body attempting to adjust to the dramatic fluxiations of the blood alcohol level.
The first 2 are why lots of people suggest drinking lots or coke or lemonade, as this sorts out the dehydration & blood sugar issues.
Others suggest eating a 'greasy fry up' or drinking milk. Excessive amounts of alcohol can temporarily damage the thin lining of the stomace. Which is why hangovers can also be associated with stomach upsets. The fat from these fry ups and the milk help to settle your stomach. Or so I have found.
Also, drinking more beer to get get rig of your hangover also works. As I said, part of it is to do with your body trying to adjust to large fluctuations in blood alcohol levels. Drinking more beer raises your blood alcohol level, which stops the mini-withdrawal (for lack of a better term) for a short time.
...err.... anyway, yeah, I drank far too much in my early 20's, so I had to look uyp this shit to sort out my daily hangovers
