Like the idea of intelligence itself, IQ is a construct, but it is still useful for predicting many outcomes in life, both academic and not. Apparently people with higher IQs even live longer and experience dementia later in old age -- even after you control for social class. How do we explain this in light of the notion that IQ tests measure only narrow "test-taking ability?"

That's because you are a thick fuck.

70 is borderline retarded. Of course, I would not trust an online test.

IQ tests are designed to measure certain abilities. they do what they're supposed to. if you think social intelligence is more important, then why do you care about IQ testing? complaining about what they measure is like saying 'this orange juice is so shitty. it doesn't even have a hint of grape in it.'

It could be a number of things. Statistical coincidence is one, such as the "80% of Israeli fighter pilot children are girls" statistic. Incomplete control of social variables is another - controlling for class is one thing, but job or lifestyle is another, and your ability to process certain information influences both. It could even be something like the influence on diet on the brain's functioning.

However, the most likely explanation is that an individual's ability to handle different kinds of data is inter-related even if not equal. A person good at visual pattern recognition is probably not going to be relatively good at handling other types of information, but not necessarily equally or proportionally as good. The main point is that while you can infer general intelligence from visual data processing, you can't draw any hard conclusions about anything but... visual data processing.

I'd also like to throw it out there that I believe (despite what some studies claim) that practise can make a significant difference to your abilities in different areas. If I did visual IQ tests constantly, I'm highly confident I'd improve at that kind of intelligence, but my linguistic or spacial skills would probably deteriorate because I was neglecting them. As it stands I spend most of my time dealing with written/spoken information, and I'd like to think I'm very good at processing and spotting logic and patterns in that kind of information, but I also feel my visual and mathematical abilities have deteriorated since school because I don't use them nearly as much these days.

I feel that way about my math abilities as well, which is why I have started studying up on math again. Got to stay well-rounded. :-)

Shouldn't trust posts online either.

Was quite a mix of questions, most were very easy actually. Pretty sure the idea of this is for people on the net to get a warm feeling of being smart.

I suspect that of most of the online tests as well, which is why I have little interest in taking them.
