I just pack my record bag with what I feel like spinning, but the stuff spans over a few different moods. Then I just start off with something I feel like droppin and then I let the crowd dictate what I spin. If they're a softer crowd then I won't spin my harder hard trance. Otherwise I just bang em till their eardrums bleed. Haha. It's all up to you tho. However you do it is your choice. That's why you're the DJ. You decide where the crowd is gunna go and you take them there.

In my opinion you shouldn't play these massive epic tracks first. How do you build a set from that. Unless you play bomb after bomb but where is the programming skill in that?

sometimes the occasion calls for bombs again and again
nothing is better than a never ending rave with nothing
but crowd-pumping, blasting, floor burning tracks that
keep the crowds partying. altho, going progressively
can give your set a touch of cache if your tracks are
picked out brilliantly...

Have a high energy set is cool but track after track of 2 min long build ups gets pretty monotonus. I have seen quite a few DJs(probably not even half as many as most of you ) but I have never seen anyone drop bomb after bomb, the tottaly work the crowd up and down through out the set.

I like to start with this songs:

alibi - eternity (original ic mix)
ayu - unite! (airwave dub)
prime mover - weapon (grinder remix)
liquid overdose - contact (side a & b1)
mauro picotto - lounge

and a few white labels, who are extremely fat to start your set!!!

when i start i like to get off with something instrumental.....something very dramatic (if you wonder what i mean listen to Blank & jones liveset from trance energy 2002 and you will know what i mean)...then i just mix in something that has the energy there but doesn't go with full power.......i like to save that for later so i get some kind of buildup (did u all get me on this one?)

something that would work after the first dramatic (lol?) part would be:

Blank & Jones - Nightclubbing (wippenberg remix)
Cloud 69 - sixty nine ways (original mix)
Dance nation - Sunshine (wippenberg remix)
Iio - Rapture (riva remix)

and on and on and so on for ever and ever.......i bet there is like millions of different trakcs u can start out with here but maybe you get the point easier hnow

Alot of good recomendations from some people in this thread...
Personally, I like to open up with a no-beat, melody that runs about close to a minute or less...doesn't seem like alot, but you could be suprised how much music you could fit in a minute with no bass line.
Then when the bassline drops...it's over.
Stuff like Bedrock - Beautfiul Strange, Tastexperience - Highlander(original and endgame remix), Jam&Spoon - Be Angeled(PvD Club mix), Sasha - Ohmna have stuff like I'm talking about...alot of you Oakey fans will recognize Highlander from his Essential Mix in September 99 from the Rojam in Shanghai, China...beautiful, graceful opening, and steady, yet not too heavy beat and melody...easy to buildup from, and easy to ease down from as well.
What it really comes down to though is your mixing style and taste. My friend who I occasionally spin with spins nothing but pure, raw hard NRG trance and hard house. For him, Delerium's Silence(Tiesto's ISOS mix) is considered soft and a good opener, where for most of us trance, that song would be the climax or highlight of a set.
The best thing to do is recognize your style of the set. Select accordingly, and drop it!

I bought this record yesterday. Gotta love the powers of Tiesto and Corsten combined. Don't know if I'd use this as an opening track though. Goes down well at the end though.
