Buffalo is one of the leading brands in EXTERNAL storage devices, they are particularly well known for their NAS drives. They are massively well known!

They use Western Digital or Seagate drives to put within their own housings. They do not manufacture their own disks, just like Dell, HP and Acer etc don't manufacture their own.

Buy with confidence, Buffalo is a rock solid storage solution provider.

just goes to show how many externals ive owned

Buffalo's a solid brand. I often buy their stuff out here, and know other people who use them a lot. They're not that populat outside Japan, but solid nonetheless.

There's a word that sums up this sort of behaviour, and that word is 'reject.'

Yay, it lives.

So I ran scanddisk, dskchk, and a bunch of acronyms I can't remember. I also relocated some of the files, and will try to defrag it later today. But I'm afraid this is not enough...

No, no, despite the joke, I'm really worried it's just a matter of time before it rebels against me again =/

If I were you, I would seriously get another HD. I'm not saying get rid of your current one, but if you truly do have an extensive collection of books/documents/nubileasianpornography, it never hurts to have a backup. You said you'll be travelling soon? 1TB HDs in the US go for like $120 anymore, and that price can only drop farther.

External HDs are absolutely notorious for setting you back a few years by suicide/incontinence, and only get worse the fuller they become. You could just as well make a torrent of many of your documents and host them on a site like Demonoid - should the catastrophic ever happen, you'll know precisely where you can find everything again. Assuming Demonoid doesn't die in the meanwhile.

Hmmm... that's not a bad idea, but I'll probably be squandering my poor money in two of the world's most expensive cities in the next few days, so buying a new HD is not really among my top priorities: it's more probable to see me streaking around Harajuku and the Trafalgar Square than buying any redundant piece of computer hardware

Given how I can't read all those books in my lifetime, I do keep just the most useful ones in on-line vaults, fearing a worst case scenario. If my apartment blows up while I'm at work or, less dramatically, my HD dies, I do have some back up copies. I just dread to think I'd have to download it all back again, as that should keep me busy for a while, heh.

In the end, I did buy another external HDD, but I'm stubbornly trying to use this old one because of its useful gigabytes.

Here's the question: I know part of the disc is damaged beyond repair. So I decided to create 13 partitions and use the ones in which I don't get this error. But, are partitions really "physical", in the sense that the first partition occupies the a coherent region of the disc and the second partition does the same to an adjacent area? I noticed I can't format some partitions due to this error, but others seem to work fine.

Dude, just transfer everything from the old onto the new, and then do a complete re-format of the old and it should be fine. Unless it's an actual manufacturing error.
