Uh, OK. And, what custom scale would that be? The majority of trance music IS in either natural minor or, to a lesser extent, harmonic or melodic minor (or borrowing b/t the three) or major. There's nothing gound-breaking going on from a modal point of view.

Music theory is nothing more than a way of describing music, so how can it not be important anymore?

I would have said music theory is much more - it is a way of *understanding* music so you can take it to the next level...

Just another point in the Ocean lab song the little guitar/synth thing that just goes 2 notes over and over changing only at the end of 4 bars. That doesn't obviously follow the chords? thats ok is it to write hooks, melodic bits that are not following the harmony?

Processing a highly structured and complex pattern of sensory input as a unified percept of "music" is probably one of the most elaborate features of the human brain.....understanding how music is perceived and how it may elicit intense sensations is far from being understood.

Sure, but that misses the point - my point was simply in response to the other dude's comment. It's not a means to an end, it's more like a way of communicating what music of any origin is, so it's hardly irrelevant to any one particular genre. Also, the role of music theory is not necessarily to help a person to advance to another level, but that certainly can be a benefit.

Absolutely. It's a pretty common technique to have a repeating motif that starts out playing over a harmonic chord, then repeat it numerous times over different chords in a progression, some of which are consonant with the motif and some of which are dissonant. This creates tension and relief, and the amount of tension is determined by the actual notes and intervals formed between the motif and the underlying chords. The motif serves as an "anchor" to the passage/progression. Hopefully that made sense!

modern chords also don't really consider a 2nd 4rth or 7th as non chord tones.
