If we want competent people in important jobs, we have to pay them well enough. They won't do it, because 'it is for the good of the country'.

But we also have to rein in out of control spending being blocked by unions.

Indeed I am. In my profession I get access to a hell of a lot of people's employment and income records. I see people pulling in six figures in jobs that don't pay a hell of a lot per hour because they work a shitload.

I agree, salaries within public sector need to be competitive. Similar to how the top non-profit jobs need to pay well too.

But on the flip side, the people being hired need to be competitive as well - and I get the impression that the various levels of government may have good people at the top, but they are hampered by layers of middle management and complacent workers at the lower levels.

I think to a lot of people govt workers are "overpaid" is because the idea that you have to work much harder for X salary in the private sector compared to how many hours government workers are thought to be working on a weekly basis. There are exceptions obviously, but I think this is generally true.

I can't wait to get my public sector job...I work for a private government funded non profit and people at the city with the same position as me make a shit load more money than I do. For that, I get a fucking measly pay equity increase each year that is laughable at best. So they give their employees a huge salary for doing the same job myself and if my agency even tries to ask for more funding we get a fat NO!

Conversely, the government employees of my industry in BC, SK, MB, and QC make significantly less then their private sector counterparts (we're talking 30-40K less).

you can't make a blanket statement like that.

the disclosure lists specific individuals, not average salaries for those positions. if you scroll down the list and you'll see many Toronto cops earning the same or more.

as for many of these public positions, you get what you pay for.

if you want someone competent in these roles, you have to offer a competitive wage. there will always be exceptions, but if private sector equivalent positions pay more, the public sector can't offer lesser compensation.

having said that, the public sector is no different than the private one in that there are many people who most of us might consider "overpaid" and many who are underpaid. people are all pissy because these figures are public, that's all.

Agree with this to some degree.
