OH NO!!!! WE SHOULD IMPRISON HIM NOW!!!
| quote: | | A: Earth Hour is an awareness event that hopes to inspire people to think about climate change, and DOES NOT hope to provide a sustainable alternative to using electricity in our every day lives. |
thats your opinion. I think its just a huge publicity scheme that people are making a lot of money off of. Just check out how many sponsors are paying for the opportunity to be part of "the message"
| quote: | | B: Maintaining or increasing current energy consumption WILL NOT solve poverty in the third world. I really don't even understand why he includes such an argument in the article. Really left field. |
Really? So explain to me then why the first thing a poor country tries to do after supplying fresh water is bring in electricity? Why do u think that northern ontario businesses that rely heavily on cheap electricity have recently gone out of business? (causing our own people to lose jobs and become poor). To the point that Mcguinty has finally included subsidizing their electricity in the latest budget. Get a clue!!!
| quote: | | C: Earth Hour is not meant to "romanticize" a world without electricity. Again, not sure where he got this...? |
thats the message i get. "look how cool we can be when we dont have electricity!!"
| quote: | | D: While he is correct in that energy is energy (only transferable, not to be created or destroyed), there are "better" choices. For instance, all the auto companies are investing significantly in new engine plants as the technology currently exists and is deemed worthwhile to invest in to create lower consumption IC engines. This change is driven BY CONSUMERS. |
there are trade offs to everything. One is Co2, one is nuclear waste,an effect on an eco system. And yes, cost is an issue too.
| quote: | | Indeed Ford recently REVAMPED the Essex engine plate for a grand total of three-quarters of a BILLION dollars. Spendy, but now worthwhile. |
spendy... so where do u propose we magically grow all our money then?
| quote: | | Investments in solar, wind and geothermal energy sources have increased SIGNIFICANTLY over the last decade as folks have become more aware of the world's energy requirements versus current infrastructure's capacity and sources. |
id say that its more to do with the technology becoming cheaper much like flat screen tv costs have lowered the more the technology becomes widespread. Thats economics.
| quote: | | Wind and solar energy use will cause skyrocketing prices, poverty and death? Whoa! | it will and IS. Are you not aware of the tax introduced to ontario last week to pay for the sweetheart Samsung "green" deal? Oh plus HST i might add. One more stake in the heart of business that powers our economy.
| quote: | | We need to look at the big picture with climate change and energy. Do research and be informed. It's important (I plan to live another 60 years) and now's the time to make a difference. |
i agree... this is why i think earth hour is a fucking joke.
The big picture is not kyoto, its not earth hour, cap and trade and all these other stupid schemes that do nothing but transfer a lot of money around.

No, he doesn't seem to want to find out what Earth Hour is promoting. He's just making silly conclusions on little/no facts and a lot of emotion.

The SUN is not known for its journalistic integrity. Could you not find a similar article from a more reputable source (I'd even take the Star).
Really man.

Sponsors PAY to have their name there. It takes money to promote an event like this.
My friend, it's the corporate sponsors (and any large corp) that have the real power to make changes for the better. Industry consumes FAR more energy than citizens.
Ha! I program and run 80kva machine at work for 12+hrs/day. That's bloody serious consumption.

READ WHAT I SAID! You can't read, Lorrie can't read. PAY ATTENTION.
Energy consumption DOES NOT EQUAL solving poverty.
Energy is important, but Lorrie is implying that if we try to conserve and be conscious about our consumption, 3rd world countries will become even more poor! Ha! 1+1=39857093f80945 sure!

What are the long term problems with solar, wind and MOST IMPORTANTLY tapping this bloody battery we're living on called EARTH via geothermal generation?
Can't win, don't try? That's INNOVATION, Jax1 style!!!!

WTF are you talking about? Corporations invest in new technology to satisfy customer requirements. HELLO???!?!?!
THEY DO THIS ALL THE TIME. Where have you been? Do you call your friends on a string between two tin cans. What planet are you on?

FUELED BY CONSUMER DEMAND. We want it, they build it. If everyone wanted to consume a lot of petrolium, GM and Chrysler wouldn't have gone out of business cause their truck programs would have survived!!! Hello??? There's life before this most recent financial collapse - this has been crippling the big three for many years (and Toyota was well exposed too).

Innovation will always have winners and losers. I kind of doubt that people are DYING in significant numbers in Northern Ontario because we have more efficient vehicles! LOL

Actually, it has already served its purpose as we're having a discussion about it.
Marketing - you just proved it works!!!1!!!11!

Reducing consumption is certainly not the answer. Lets burn MORE oil and see if that helps!!!!!111!!!!

Goldstein has done a lot of research about this topic and written extensively about it. Perhaps you should look up more of his articles to get a sense of who he is as a writer.
| quote: | The SUN is not known for its journalistic integrity. Could you not find a similar article from a more reputable source (I'd even take the Star).
Really man. |
Its an opinion piece in a comment section. I doubt youd find a similar article in the Star because as the Sun is a conservative mouthpiece, the Star is a Liberal mouthpiece.

right. And then its the same people promoting earth hour that will turn around and tell you that corporations are evil and that everyone should farm the land and eat green beans. This is a huge marketing opportunity. Dont you get it? The plus side of all this at least is that it creates some jobs.
| quote: | | Ha! I program and run 80kva machine at work for 12+hrs/day. That's bloody serious consumption. |
LOL! and what does this dohickey do exactly?

i can read, i just dont agree with what you are writing! Hurling personal insults just weakens your position.
Economies rely on cheap plentiful power + good economy provides jobs = people rise out of poverty
Do you know why we have conserved so much energy in the last year? Its called the recession. The energy conserved is because people are out of work and we are poorer. And now people want us to do this voluntarily?
| quote: | | IT'S IN YOUR MIND. Look at the facts. |
i could say the same thing to you, but i wont lower myself to that kind of pettiness.
| quote: | | What are the long term problems with solar, wind and MOST IMPORTANTLY tapping this bloody battery we're living on called EARTH via geothermal generation? |
Do you really think that we could power our whole economy with solar panels that are expensive, take up huge amounts of space, and only work when the sun is shining bright? And where do we store excess power? Batteries that contain acids and heavy metals?
| quote: | | Can't win, don't try? That's INNOVATION, Jax1 style!!!! |
no, jayx1 style is to think long term and go big or go home. Lets bring in ideas that work using the economic levers that already exist to tackle real environmental issues such as dirty water, air pollution (im talking particulate and chemicals, not co2), and solid waste. Jayx1 style is not cheesy gimmicks, artificial crisis, and policies that do nothing to help the environment and do everything to transfer wealth around.
| quote: | WTF are you talking about? Corporations invest in new technology to satisfy customer requirements. HELLO???!?!?!
THEY DO THIS ALL THE TIME. Where have you been? Do you call your friends on a string between two tin cans. What planet are you on? |
wow the insults are ripe today arent they?
Corperations invest in upgrades when its COST EFFICIENT to do so. Not because some enviro nuts think they should. When the technology becomes cheaper and it makes economic sense to do so, companies will retrofit. BTW even the telephone took decades to become standard and decades more to become widespread. It didnt just happen overnight

Consumers want the most for the least. Period. That will never change. So like business, once its cost effective to "go green" youll see people lining up down the block to do so.
| quote: | Innovation will always have winners and losers. I kind of doubt that people are DYING in significant numbers in Northern Ontario because we have more efficient vehicles! LOL

go have a chat with the thousands laid off because of hydro rates and see if you are still laughing then.

yup... it proves that people are gullible too.

who said it had to be oil?
