this year, just as the last couple of years, the weather for doors open was fantastic. nothing but sunshine and a warm breeze. only difference for me was that i only did one day (sunday) instead of both like i've done previously.

however, i'm glad i did my sunday plan as it was the most exciting.

i started off with the elgin/wintergarden theatres. i missed this one last year and was one of the places i really wanted to see. i have to say, the spaces are really amazing. and the amount of work that went into restoring it is equally amazing.

inside the elgin

the ceiling of the balcony which is covered in real leaves and lanterns. i was really suprised when i entered this space, having no idea that it would be like this.

i then went off to check out the newly opened green roof on top of the city hall podium. all i have to say is, wow! finally, after all these years, people can finally come up close to the architecture and appreciate it for what it is. this is definitely one of the most unique city halls in the world and we just made it that much better. i'm really excited about how this space will be used and looking forward to the rest of improvements that will transform nathan phillips square even more.

while there, i also went up to the observation deck to check out the ever changing skyline. being above ground has always fascinated me and what made it even more interesting was to see the changes that occured since the last time that i was there 4 years ago.

view to the south

after a short break, i headed over to one of our more famous hotels, the kind edward. i've seen many urban exploration photos documenting the infamous crystal ballroom on the top floor of the building and was really looking forward to seeing it myself before the renovations start. i can only imagine how grand it was at its peak. the views from the room are just amazing.

looking east

after a quick detour to check out diamond and schmitt architects, i headed back east towards the distillery where they opened up to 2 buildings that hadn't been on the doors open program before. i think the thing i liked most was seeing how busy this place was. people shopping, wandering, checking out different things, eating/drinking on the patio...it really has become a weekend destination for a huge amount of people. i'm glad to have witnessed this great transformation since the first time i stepped foot there 5 years ago.

FULL ALBUM

and as always, i look forward to doing it all again next year.
