i don't understand why everyone's got their panties in a bunch.
ethnic studies sounded to me like a class where you would learn about and analyze cultural difference in an academic environment, and something that would be available for everyone to take, whether of that ethnicity or not. now that would be a good class that promotes understanding and reduces ignorance and division.
the reality, at least what the article is making it out to be, is that these ethnic studies classes are de-facto "made for Mexicans." Now, I doubt that non-mexicans are forbidden from taking these classes. But if the class is taught with the assumption that it will be mexicans only, and geared toward mexicans only, it will alienate everyone else.
That is simply anti-educational, and it has no place in public schools funded by government money.
If you had a daughter, wouldn't you be pissed if your money was supporting classes "just for men" in public schools?

Sure, that's where those words originated. I agree. However, over time they have come to describe anybody in any state that closely resembles those "genuine" Southern rednecks or "genuine" Appalachian hillbillies. It's perfectly acceptable and highly common to use them in reference to people outside of those regions, whether you like it or not. |
Stereotyping is never "Perfectly Acceptable"

Oh, I understood. If something is never "perfectly acceptable", then you shouldn't include it in sarcasm. Don't lecture me about something if you're not going to abide by your own beliefs. |
I'll lecture you whenever I want.
