They may not have fitted your style but they're better monitors

Being serious, I did a three session shootout at two different guitar centers to really compare every brand and model of monitor and posted the results here. Yes, they are subjective, but I drew comparisons of speakers in different environments, and A/B'd each one against each other. That's where I really found the problem with KRK's:

With a lot of the monitors, I could pinpoint an easily noticeable problem, such as the adams being too bright or the BM6's having slightly too little bass or the BX8's having completely muddy lower mid. But with the KRK's there was just a spectrum wide lack of clarity - it's subtle but it's definitely there and really stuck out against other models like HS80's, BM5As, HR824's etc. They don't sound terrible but once I realised what they're missing it became incredibly hard to not let it bother me.

It's just my opinion, but I've now spoken to many others including on here that have the same take on them - I just feel there's better out there for the money, that's all.

Yeah, I think that he should switch those AV40s to any kind of speakers discuss above (anything is better then AV40s) - the choice is his and I want him to understand that, whatever he decide to do in the next few days, he can always change his mind later. Over the time he will notice some small differences between speaker/sound and will gain/develop his own taste for what he would like to hear.

I've had my KRK V6's for about 4 years now.. paid $500 back then.. While I "do" think it adds slight color to the sound to make things sound better.. just get used to them.. (as you would need to with any others) they work perfectly fine for producing.
For $300, I think it's worth the money as long as they're in good working conidtion.

V6s are excellent speakers, don't listen to KRK hate on here. Anything will be better than Av40s. Make sure that they are in decent condition though.

Eh...

I'm guessing the speakers were in different locations, and the Guitar Center production room isn't the same as your own studio...

it's kind of pointless to try and make an objective decision.

Tomorrow I'm picking up some Mackie MR8s from a girl off craigslist for $400. My first real monitors, been on shitty speakers and cans so far.

I explained everything in this thread. You can't ever really do a fully scientifically controlled test unless you had a completely controlled environment and the space to set them up so you could A/B all of them without interference.

The best I could do was a comparitive test, taking the environment and placement in to consideration, so really they were all subject to the same disadvantages, then seeing if that same flaw (and positives) presented in the other listening environments, to really see if they were common traits of each monitor. I'm also an engineer so I've used a lot of monitors professionally and some of my feedback is based on my experience in professional studio environments (not bedroom or project studios).

The Rokits definitely are. I've got the RP6 to DJ with but I would not use them to produce. They just aren't clear enough.

Next to my Dynaudio BM5a they are vastly inferior. Not rubbish of course, but definitely not what I would recommend for producing.

The BM5a's are really lovely monitors. The KRK's sound like they're made of stiff plastic next the clarity of of the dynaudios.
