My first time at Vola! Unfortunately, had to leave at 3 AM since my gf had a li'l too much to drink, lol.

About Vola: Really liked the place. The temperature was perfect (ie sometimes Guv gets unbearably hot...).

About the music: My experience with trance is very limited, so I'm having trouble with this. I realllly liked the limited amount I heard j00f, and Aerodromme, but was that actually TRANCE they were playing? My experience (at ASOT 450, PVD at Space Miami, other random shows at guv, gf playing Armin, Corsten, etc) is that there's almost ALWAYS a dominant kickdrum every beat and dominant snare every second beat. A melody builds up, a snare roll ensues, then that same melody plays with the said kick drum and snare, then breakdown. I never really liked any of those shows (it's like dancing to a ticking clock, tick-tock, tick-tock, drum-snare), save for a few good breakdowns. And vocals, eww :P

But this had basslines, repetitive elements that build and fade, rhythms, music I was able to get into! It lived up to his essential mix! Maybe it's because it's "psytrance"? I don't know too much about the genre. I'll have to download the whole set and give it a listen.

I think this explains a lot.

You are correct. J00F specializes in this genre as well as Progressive Psytrance.

He usually starts off slower with prog-psy and builds into full-on psytrance which can be quite monotonous with rolling thick basslines which is why you don't hear your 2 minute breakdowns. He's never been one to be a part of the usual in-crowd when it comes to trance.

j00f is in a league of his own.

actually, i think j00f and chris lawrence are two DJs who play trance closest to its original form (like, early 90s trance)

Was good seeing everyone on Friday night and I had a blast as I'd expect to have with a scenario such as this. I've written a review of the night for Trancealert which will also have the tracklist updated for those interested. Cheers.

Agreed 100%!! thank god that we still have a handful of Dj's that actually do play trance the way it was meant to be.

hehe I can see how this could be confusing for those that dont listen to this style of trance music but the truth is that what J00f plays is indeed trance music.
Trance music has evolved so much in the past decade or so to something else that's more like pop music if anything. the whole hypnotic factor has more less vanished but J00f has been able to maintain the true form of trance music and my god he is just getting better and better.

you should start listening to more prog psy trance and join the dark side of things. check out the psy download thread and download some fo the sets listed there.

Sure J00f does have a lot of psy influence in his music but I honeslty cant say he is purely a psy trance Dj. All I can say is that his music is just a journey and he takes you far far away. .

Thanks for your reply, I'll definitely check out the psy download section.

Funny you mention that line about the "journey", since I had a convo with my gf that night on how I was looking forward to the journey, and she mentioned how she doesn't understand how a set can be a journey or "tell a story" per se; instead she sees music as something purely in the moment. I guess that explains her gravitating toward the more pop-y, vocal-y in your face stuff. Sorry for the thread hijack, i just had that eureka moment.

Back on topic, I'll be on the lookout for future j00f events, although it looks like they are pretty rare.

I personally thought J00f killed it! I stayed until 4am, which for me these days is late. lol I was worried that his sound wouldn't suit a small venue like Vola, but he proved me wrong! Really relentless set. I would have liked it a bit 'darker', but I was still satisfied with the tracks he chose. He had a smile on his face the entire set, which is always nice to see. He still stands out as one of the most talented Dj's I've ever seen.

THE CROWD WAS HORRIBLE THOUGH. Which might explain that random retarded email Oz got. I was pushed out of the way at the front by two completely hammered idiots so they could worship J00f, even know they had no idea what type of music he was playing. And the one dude kept yelling his name, and putting his camera right in his face. I tried talking some sense into him, but dude was clueless, and way too drunk. And too much porno dancing!!! gawd! There's always the random weirdos at Vola, but this night, the crowd was a complete turn off on so many levels. Obviously not the clubs fault, but it was unfortunate non the less.

Thanks for another great booking Vola! Aside from the crowd, it was another great night of music

LOL this guy was SOOO annoying!! I got excited when he left a couple of times thinking that he'd finally decided to call a cab but nope, showed up again with drinks in hand. He kept ramming into me and stepping on my foot lol. I feel worse for J00f though having this bag of shambles in his face.
