People seem to think all Facebook is used for is updating statuses and conversing with people you could just meet up with, but they forget the incredibly useful and practical application of keeping in touch with people that you have little hope of actually seeing in person or even calling any time soon.

I've never been on a single social networking site simply because I see it as a massive waste of time and yet another pointless distraction. Although vast majority of my friends has a facebook account, I've never felt social pressure to join the site nor do I feel like I'm missing something important.

I think social networking nurtures human obsession to be up to date with everything right here right now; isn't enough that we're bombarded with worldwide news on a daily basis, we now must know what our so-called "friends" are up to, however trivial it may be. Of course, it all begins with human's desire to share the oh so relevant news with "the world" in shortest time possible, which ensures that everyone involved stays in the circle jerk for as long as possible.

It seems that technology helps to hide our growing distance from each other and ourselves. Consider how many of us are desperate for human contact yet will phone, text, chat and blog rather than walk outside and meet the neighbor we’ve been living next to for the past 4 years and don’t even know by name.

Have you ever heard about E-Mail? Or Skype?

I am not on any of them, and never have been. There are a number of reasons why, but the big one is that I just don't see any utility in them.

Even if they were modestly useful, however, they would pose problems. I'm a private person, so I really can't imagine sharing much information on them, and if I were going to then I would have to sharply limit access, which would entail awkwardly refusing to add people as friends and so forth. It's a mess I'd really rather not get involved with.

Further, I prefer to compartmentalize my various friends, family, and associates. The last thing I want is some kind of clearinghouse of information about myself and my personal relationships where everyone I know can see everyone else I know and is privy to some of our online interactions.
