before I hit the couch...
welcome to the 21st century inside the music industry.
I can't complain, I get more off music than most of you guys do. But still, those amounts are a complete joke if you ask me.
Don't blame the labels too quickly. Most of them have side-activities now so they can eat, just like you guys. I read that labels get 80% off your release. Sure they do, who's gonna pay for servers, maintenance, internet costs, management of the data, contracts, deals with all portals. Who's gonna make use of your tracks like 20 times a year, so it potentially multiplies your visibility by 20? Who's gonna send your publishing contracts on time, so you get (if you subscribe to the author rights guild in your country) your author rights paid in FULL?
Do you really think that your records make money for the labels? Come on... The luckiest guys inside the bizz will tell you... Running a label is like racing on sundays on amateur circuits nowadays. Forget the bling bling effects. Do it out of love for the music, get side-activities to cover your costs, and pray.
My new record got released this week, I pushed it really hard with what I had, I'll be happy if it generates 100$ gross income, despite many plays on all radio shows from your dj mag top 10 faves, all playing the cheesy version instead. :-/
If you think that on your own you can make $ with your record, please do, and consider yourself lucky AND full of talent after the first quarter when you make more than 500$ gross sale so they don't put your stuff offline. That's the truth coming up next. And if you're really lucky, let me wish you it goes over and over for the next 20 years. Believe me when I wish you the very best of luck. REALLY.
Things are not as easy as they seem, and this is a crap bizz that demands tremendous effort to get somewhere. Ask my colleagues, they will tell you. Ask yourself the right question... why are you doing this? Money and fame, or high hopes of a better world. Both ways will make you unhappy at different periods, but they will make you as much happy too...
