You should talk to Sunsnail

He's self-taught (I think...)

Anyhow, he plays really well from a lot of different genres

I have been playing for years since i was about 7 or 8, i was originally taught by my father and for the most part i have been self taught through the years. although the 10 years of formal piano didn't hurt.... over the years i have collected a small arsenal of guitars, amps and a sitar....

there is no right or wrong way to play, just whats comfortable to you personally.

I still get stuck playing rhythm guitar and never lead when we play. Untrusting bitch!

On a side note, one of the most impressive things I've seen on the guitar was seeing Steve Vai playing this thing live, actually using all 3 necks at once. He also played one shaped like a love heart that looked fucking ridiculous. His style wouldn't appeal to everyone though mind you.

Tom Morello is like a jebus.

We have a 12 string, but we don't really touch it too much.

I started playing late 08. I generally learned everything by youtube and or reading tabs and chord charts. I started out on a Ovation GC Celebrity (not necessary cheap for a starter guitar) but with it's thin shape and easy access to the higher frets, made it a blast to play for a first instrument. my first song i actually learned was actually in a completely different tuning (open D tuning). so actually learning and playing is only as hard as you make it out to be. i think the hardest part was actually just getting a fluid rhythm with your strumming hand and singing along. I now have a Takamine EG340SC (about 500) and a Taylor 214ce (about 1K). You have a choice of grabbing a decent priced guitar (about 300-400) if you're serious because you'll upgrade later or buy a p.o.s guitar for like a hundred dollars, deal with the horrible action (string height) and just give up.

I recommend Takamine for a really good acoustic guitar that won't break your bank, a nd good for beginners.

not to mention that the built in tuner also works wonders for beginners...although you should really learn to do it the proper way too.

uploading a garageband sample of just jamming.
