alright, i gotta another one i just thought of...
3 guys check into a hotel. the cost for them to stay there comes out to be $30. they all chip in $10 each. they then go up to there room in the hotel. the employee at the front desk realizes that he over-charged the guests, the actual cost of the room was only $25. he sends the bellboy with extra $5 dollars to give back to the guests. the bell boy not wanting to do something for nothing, decides to keep $2 as a tip for himself, and give the other $3 back to the guests. the guests are handed the $3 dollars by the bellboy, which they immediately split $1 for each person. so, in total, they started out chipping in $10, and got $1 back = that's $9 dollars total. if you multiply $9 x 3 (number of guests) = $27 dollars. the bellboy kept $2 for himself. $27 + $2 = $29. what happened to the missing extra dollar. |
Sorry, bluejay I've heard of this one about 5rys ago on Car Talk (which has a weekly puzzler). It's more of a math question, but basiclly the equation 3x9+2=29 is flawed, the total shouldnt be $30 since they aren't paying $10 anymore, and you cant add $2 because the bell boy is taking money rather than contributing it. Its easier to explain by showing the transfer of money below:
$30 guys + 0 bellboy + 0 hotel = $30
$00 guys + 0 bellboy + 30 hotel = $30
$00 guys + 5 bellboy + 25 hotel = $30
$03 guys + 2 bellboy + 25 hotel = $30
so the equation should be
3 x $9 [3guys spend] = $27
$2[bell] + $25[hotel] = $27
