sounds like a graphics problem. hopefully it isn't the motherboard. you might want to have it checked out, and see if the monitor cable is set properly in the laptop. it's happened to me once before.

That's reassuring. Thank you.
I hope it's quick to repair. I really need to bring it with me.

Similar things have happened to me over the years with desktop computers. The culprit was always down to Motherboard or RAM. CPU's rarely die, even if heat is a factor, as motherboards should have the auto-shutdown feature when the CPU reaches a thermal threshold.

If you have a warranty, run it over to them to have them fix it. They could pull a fast one on you, and say you voided it, if you fuck up something else by accessing the internals of the laptop.

If it indeed needs a new motherboard or RAM, the turn time shouldn't be long. Especially if it's ram, just pop out the old and replace with new, shouldn't take more then 10 minutes, as long as the sticks are easily accessible.

If they have to replace either, don't worry about your data. All of it should be intact when the computer is repaired.

Hope you get it straightened out quickly.

It isn't reassuring. On a laptop the video card is soldered to the motherboard. Like I said the whole board needs to be replaced. Dress up really sexy when you bring it in and ask for a loaner. If he isn't gay he'll get a boner and give you a loaner.

My laptop does not want to start. I press the power button, it seems to be running, the power button light is on and laptop is 'humming'. But the screen is totally black.
It's been acting up for days, the screen would turn completely dark on me, as if it's going on hibernate while I'm already using it. So I would turn it off and restart it again and it would work.
But I haven't been able to turn it on since yesterday.

Anyone know what could be the problem?
I have a 1 year warranty on it so I will bring it to Future Shop for repair, but I would like to know if there is anything I could do first to make it work.

i had the same thing happen to my old compaq a month out of warranty; i was fucking livid. it was the mobo. if you're still under warranty get it replaced ASAP. pull out the HDD if you want to save your shit.

Mine too is a Compaq. I took it to the shop and they said it needs to be reformatted, everything will be lost.. I don't really have anything of significant importance on it. Losing the tunes stings, though.

I have to wait 2 weeks to get it back. Motherfuck!

all it needs is a format? shit, you could've done that yourself for free :P

i'm surprised that's all it needs though, judging from your description i thought for sure it was toast. and if all it needs is a reformatting, there should've been some sort of way to get at least some of your info out of there before wiping it clean and starting over- the shop you sent it to sounds suspect, imo.

and fucking 2 weeks for a format? actually, i'm pretty positive now that those people are fucking you over. how much are they charging you?

They're not charging me anything, fortunately.

It was my bf who took it to Future Shop, and I'm pretty sure he said that it needs to be reformatted, that they have to send it to the manufacturer for repair. It could also be toast, I don't know, I just wanted to know how long it will take to fix without much interest in the details.

I couldn't have done it myself, I am, as you can probably tell, completely useless in these matters.

If you're using a compaq, it might be worth it to try and recover whatever you can from the hard drive, and then just wipe it clean, donate it, and buy a new computer. Laptops are becoming dirt-cheap these days, and you could probably get a much better machine for $400-500.

I guess I never registered the Microsoft Word that I have any it asks for my 25-digit product key but I tried using the 25-digit product key on the underside of my Toshiba and it said it was invalid.
What do I do?
I need Word for an assignment due tomorrow!

Links for free Word downloads would be great!
