I don't particularly see how the cookie-cutter 'tech house' music doesn't sound to woscar as if it's made by robots.

I mean, from a programming perspective it would be super easy to recreate automatically.

- utilize a particular, small bank of samples
- one measure basic tech house beat + bass that repeats exactly the same over the course of the track, perhaps with the addition of one loop somewhere in the track
- add a random 'ethnic' percussion loop on top
- put a breakdown somewhere in there with a white noise filter or loop on a lead line prior to a bass drop
- optionally add the looped recorded voice of a dead jazz, soul, or blues, or salsa musician, or a single repetitive jazz or disco sample.
- dj friendly intro/outro
- master/mix them all in the same way

I thought that he was talking more about the sounds (lots of synthetic, "cold," metallic stuff) than about the arrangement or programming. I have seen a few tech house fans around here voice distaste for "artificial" sounds before.

yeah well the trend is this 'ethnic' drummy samply stuff (see artists like seuill, anthony collins, luciano) or the latin soul samply stuff (see sect-man of wisdom, la pena) jazz/blues samply stuff, or disco samply stuff (lee curtiss - the glow)

i guess this gives people the (silly) idea that the music is more human? yet the arrangement and treatment of the samples is so systematic.


i'd say that techno sounds like its made by robots, and that's exactly what it set out to do. (cybotron? the man-machine?, planetary assault systems? metroplex?)

tech house sounds like it was made by ableton, and it pretends to have 'humanity' through the indulgent appropriation of samples of music styles it deems to be 'human' and authoritative.

the discussion is not really about what's acceptable and even less about what's enjoyable - it's about the silly comment that woscar made about 'techno' sounding like 'robots'.

But you do make narrow generalizations about the stuff people are into. Also, I believe he was referring to the sound aesthetic rather than the structure. Not that I completely agree with him on that though, especially since there is very warm and melodic techno out there.
