The conditions that these cats and dogs are kept under are DEPLORABLE. Do you know this word and its many variants? It's not the same thing because in most developed countries there exist laws that strictly stipulate their commerce as well as execution and generally speaking, it's as swift and efficient as possible. Until then, cows live a life of grazing with one another in the sun and green grass; just as they would opt to do had no human lorded over them.

I'm not saying everyone is cruel to the poor animals, but it's not always nice and cute like that. The Mad Cow Disease did break out for a reason...

Indeed, it is in a slaughterhouse's best interest to keep things as sterile and quick as possible so as to minimize the chances of viral infection and diseases, as well as the cleanup process and re-purpose/packaging. I've seen it myself - for cows, there is a device called a "knocker"; it's a foot-long, steel spike that penetrates their skull in less than a second and drops them before they even know a bit of pain. They are cut up after they are fully dead because this minimizes the chances of their thrashing around and damaging anything/anyone.

I know these exist.

In China, there exist no laws to restrict the commerce of animal processing. Indeed, the Chinese Government itself hires people to go into the streets and beat stray dogs to death so that they can be skinned or eaten for a paltry price, all in the interest of "public health". But that's for the lucky ones; many dogs and cats are corralled into cages as full as they can stuff them, left in the sun and weather for exposure, going insane from fright and squalid conditions of starvation and physical abuse, several of them still having collars on because they were simply plucked from the streets or even people's homes due to the complete lack of governmental ordinance and management of the particular industry.

Which, I agree, is a shame.

But don't get me wrong, I would say the chicken processing industry has a history of being quite similar - and indeed, the US saw a recent, massive egg recall because these same conditions were so mismanaged, so horrible, and so lacking in governmental oversight that people were put in harm as well. How long before the almost completely unrestricted situation in China results in a communicable disease so lethal that nobody left remembers Communism?

Hmm... I don't think it's going to be this grave but, yeah, this is bound to happen any time soon

What's that supposed to mean? I simply don't want to eat an animal that I keep as a pet, never mind the brutal way in which they are kept, culminating in a deplorably bloody death. I don't want to eat beef from a cow that's had a death rivaling the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I'm sorry, I just get easily riled up about this topic. Cats and dogs are some of the only things that prevent me from killing people.

I don't like eating cats and dogs for sentimental reasons, but I wouldn't pretend it's any more wrong than eating other animals. The main problem with what the OP describes is the terrible treatment of the animals while they're still alive.

There are far more despicable Chinese culinary habits. They have one dish, considered a delicacy, where they scale a fish, chop its tail off and then boil it in oil while it's still alive. The fish is then served up while still taking its last gasps of air - the aim of the meal is for the fish to still be visibly gulping as the plate arrives at your table.

And no, this isn't a myth. I've seen a Chinese chef at a top restaurant do the entire process.

That I wonder if everyone that thinks this is deplorable would also be outraged by a similar situation afflicting other animals, such as cows and pigs, and I also wonder if people would be tolerant of this situation if the dogs were well kept, but were swiftly and painlessly killed in order to be devoured by hungry foreigners.

nah.. well birds are generally omnivores so you're comparing a more primitive type meat (bird/lizzard) to a mamalian meat (which i was touching base on). carnivore isn't a very good cladistical measure as it groups way too many animals to an extremley primitive homology. I know the inuit can solely live on seal for example (a carnivore) and they do fine. Its all about adjusting your body to the diet, albeit it may take several generations to do so, it could suffice compared to eating herbivores.

Keep in mind humans have developed into pure gluttons, realistically we should be able to survive on a 1500 calorie diet, if not less!. The logic for evolution says that if you can spend less energy to get more, its beneficial. A calorie/nutritionally dense food, is always better and more convenient.

The 'medicine' industry there is also responsible for killing off masses of endangered species, rhinos and tigers especially. Their torture of bears with tubes stuck in their bile ducts is horrific as well

No, I wouldn't find it deplorable for Chinese to do it, as long as the animals are treated and killed humanely. I would find it deplorable no matter what in America because it's just culturally repulsive. I can't eat an animal that I or so many people I've known had as a pet.

I know many people around here that keep pigs as pets. Would that make pork immoral in Brazil then?
