That's a pretty big blanket statement- to say that people only work with him for money and exposure. Maybe they want to work with him for an artistic level?
I disagree here. He posted the rant on Resident Advisor, a web site with a clientele that doesn't care about anything related to deadmau5. I don't think many of Joel's fans would visit the Soundcloud page either (how many of them know what that is?), and on Joel's blog, he didn't reference Orlando's name in his rant. So outside of TA and a couple other places, Orlando is getting no exposure.
I'm convinced the only reason he has a huge following is because of the geek character and mousehead gimmick.
Take that away and his music is very generic. He used to be a good producer on albums like Get Scraped and some of his tracks like "Faxing Berlin" and "Arguru". But ever since "Strobe", his productions have been pretty bland.
He's taking the same route as the Swedish House Mafia: whip out a generic track that sounds like the rest of your stuff, and watch it rise on the Beatport charts. And people think because of that, the artist must be good.
As an entertainer he's doing better than ever now. But as a musician- an artist, he's fallen a lot over the past couple years. |
I'm not going to do the individual quoting thing - just because I have a lot of work that I've been putting off all night.
I hear your points. That said, I don't agree with all of them but I hope that's alright.
I don't buy the whole "now that you're famous, act a certain way" rulebook. You're still who you are and you should be able to voice your opinion, especially when people try to drag you into the mud.
I also think that as you get bigger, more people are going to try and claim that they're your friend and try to get something out of you. I'm not saying that everybody who approaches him is out to do that but clearly there are people who have that motivation. Not just for deadmau5 - for anyone who is famous or successful.
I also think that if his fans only cared about a hat and him being a geek, he wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as he is. There's a lot to it - its a whole combination of things that he's managed to pull together.
The first time we played with him, he was opening for James Zabiela in NYC. Now he's a much bigger performer and it's all happened very quickly. If it would be that easy, dont you think more artists would have some kind of gimmick by now?
I just don't know why this guy riles people up so much.
Anyhow I hope my points don't rile you up. I hadn't heard of this whole Orlando/deadmau5 thing until a friend of mine pointed it out to me tonight. lols.
