The cd mixers in the picture are pretty kewl. I opted for a cheaper cdn mixer from Numark- They run about 500 U.S. Dollars.

but seriously, i think 192kbps mp3s are fine, i can't tell a difference. and when ripping from vinyl, you always get noise, at least i do. even with brand new needles, tech12s, clean records etc.

you need a really high quality computer and soundcard to be able to rip properly.

personally, i would just use 192kbps mp3s off or CDs, that's good enough.

the players also play tracks off of Secure Digital Cards i think.

I wouldn't reccomend this if you're playing at a big venue for a large audience though. Chances are, if I can hear the difference with my crappy 220 Watt SONY Dolby Pro Logic MCH-M300AV 50+1 CD changer system, it can DEFINITELY be heard at a club/theatre/venue with a top of the line system. In fact, it should be VERY easy then. When playing for ANY venue, rip at 48000 Hertz for vinyl, 44100 Hertz for CD, 16-bit PCM, WAVE file. Convert that to MP3 at 320 kbps with the latest LAME (this is important) encoder. Burn all those files to 2 MP3 CDs. There you go! CD, vinyl, or DAT quality (to the "normal" human ear) music, ready for mixing. What was so hard about that?

nothing hard about it at all.

i just don't have the equipment to rip like that.

my ears are probably blown from too many rock concerts and raves, maybe that is why i don't notice, but 192kbps and up all sounds the same to me.

your right though, i should not assume that about my audience. for now, i only play in my dining room to a crowd of 1 though, or submit my mixes to an online radio station at 56kbps mp3 anyway so it don't matter much.

The reasons I prefer vinyl over cd's are these:

Any wanker can get ahold of almost ANY track, and butcher it at some stoopid under-fifteens only party.

Ppl who want flawless mixing, can just edit the tracks in a program before burning the cd, and make them all the same BPM!
so if one track is on +4%, any of your other tracks will just need to be set to that to match PERFECTLY.

Vinyl is sexier

You can 'feel' the music on vinyl

There is this DJ back in Cape Town who uses CDs, and he'll play the latest choons coz he can get them on mp3, thereby making all the other 12" djs look old and dated when they get copies

I know that a lot of people gave great reasons about how there's nothing wrong with mixing CD's and made great points.

And what I'm about to say isn't like a big long reason why I like Vinyl more then CD's, and will probably make no sence to eveyone else, and it isn't even a good reason.

I wanna see a DJ, not a CDJ hehe. Just when I look into the booth and there's no tables, just a CD mixer thing, it looks weird to me...I dunno why

you old old fasioned guys that are so dogmatic about spinning vynil probably haven´t tried mixing cds before. And yes if a Cd Dj in Cape Town can put all the other fools to shame it is because he is good and can get good tracks right away, so I see nothing wrong with that.
The fool that is so pissed off about it is just jealous and needs to somehow get over it and try harder to be better. I learned to spin with vnil and sure the dj has a lot more control of what is going on. but the same skills are required to spin a cd. you still got to know how to beat match and a little about music. And No it is impossible to burn tracks at exactly the same pitch as another unles it is something cheesymade only with a sequncer and some synthesizer presets.

just a side note, bad boy bill has his vinyl repressed all at the same BPM so he can mix without having to mess with the pitch.

also, turntables are the best, but i still want a couple CD players. just so i can drop the best tracks is all.

i see no reason i should pay $300 for a record that will wear out when i play it.
