Theoretically it might be possible to "time travel". But physically I say it would be impossible. If something can be accelerated at the speed of light, then the perception would be that time is standing still. because the person/object does not see any movement what so ever. It would be as if time froze. Travelling faster than the speed of light would permit the perception of going back in time because everything would be seen as occuring in reverse order. But to physically alter something by this method would be impossible, because all we'd be seeing are beams of light.

Anyway... I think i'm crapping on... Whoever said the more u explain the more confusing it gets was right.

Mine's a theory. But I still believe it's impossible to travel through time.

yeah time travel in the way that we look at it is not gonna happen. It's not gonna be like in Back to the Future with Doc's flux compacitor or whatever he had.

but if you can shoot particles faster than the speed of light through a certain type of liquid, then in essence, "time travel" has been done.

AGREED. Why shouldn't we tamper with it? What if we were to mess with something that REALLY changed the world and created a "paradox"? What if we were to change 2001-09-11? Answer: We wouldn't know what the terrorists REALLY have in store for us! Or, what if you were to do something that would cause your life to cease existance? Would you just disappear? If so, where would you go?

exactly, and if you would travel faster than the speed of light your body mass would be more than the entire universe and you would shrink smaller than the smallest particle.

in theory it is possible. But only if a thing called a "wormhole" exists. You all no what one of those is rite? u see em in startrek and shit, u enter one u travel huge distances of space in seconds.

Rite.. before i start its also important that you know what happens when you travel at speeds greater than the speed of light (like robert has talked about above.) You ever heard the story in physics where, if u sent a rocket from earth at the speed of light, when they return 20 minutes later millions and millions of years on earth will hav gone by. So basically while your travelling at speed of light, everything else in the universe is ageing quicker than you (go read einsteins relativity papers, very interesting stuff)

So.. if u were able to physically catch onto one end of a wormhole with a rocket, and go flying off at the speed of light the this would put the wormhole in a state of temporal flux. With correct calculations u could make it so that entering the wormhole would bring u back tens/thousands/millions/etc. of years into the past

But this all depends on whether the speed of light is possible, and whether wormholes exist which is another debate.

Mike

a wormhole doesnt exist as such.

when approaching the speed of light neither time, lenght or mass remains constant.
imagine you want to travel to andromeda, which is something like 2 million lightyears away.
first of all accelarating to lightspeed. if you have an infinite accelaration you will be at lightspeed instantly. however the human body would find this very unpleasant. let's say you accelarate at 1G (9.81 m/s).
at this rate it will take around a year to reach lightspeed.
offcourse you want to hit the brakes at 1G too, so another year for slowing down.
once you have reached lightspeed the journey will take no more time at all, because at lightspeed the distance will have shrunk to zero.

for the people on earth however 2 million years would have passed.
also try navigating thru the universe when the distance is zero.

Talking

if u was to travel @ the speed of light, ur body would literally melt...
but it would be quite cool to watch someone try to travel @ the speed of light...

if you would travel the speed of light your body mass would increase to infinity and it would also take an infinite amount of energy to accelerate you to the lightspeed.

the energy required to travel light speed isnt infinite. Its a 2 digite number x 10 to the power of 64. In other words more energy than whats on offer in the universe. Scientists are looking for other sources of power such as anti-matter which is beyond my understanding capabilities

There is a greek scientist who has found in theory a way for the crew on a vessle to survive the speed of light and what it involves is the actual spaceship not moving, but the space around them moving. To use a more sci-fi word, the ship would be inside a kind of "warp-bubble" whilst the space around it moves at the speed of light and greater.

you cant say how much energy you need to move an object with an infinite mass.

It simply cannot happen....why.....well

2nd law of thermodynamics basically states.....time always moves forward..in order for time travel to work...it would have to side step the law. THat has not happens and it also states that the world is winding down.....going from order to disorder....wonderful law really...and it has not been proven wrong since it was theoried.
