So I've been looking more into the pre-2002 trance sound that all of you have been raving about on here. What is so great about it? It's basically a primitive, watered-down version of current trance with fewer melodies and rougher production qualities.

For example, Paul Van Dyk's most famous tracks sound like the stuff that beginners post in the music production forum. They're very, very basic. I'm not expecting Andy Blueman orchestral breakdowns and supersaw,

Aside from the simplicity and nostalgic factor, what is so good about classic trance?

Dont criticize music from a period of time whereby you've barely even bothered to spend time to find any decent tunes with an open-minded perspective. Making references to Paul Van Dyk's early works shows you barely give a shit in your course to do so or you either haven't grown any pubes yet.

You say simple melodies in trance classics are primitive. I find them alot easier to remember and conveys the meaning of the track more effectively. Is that why producers/DJ's these days run out of ideas too quickly only to find themselves remixing old tunes all over again eh?

Watered down. We are talking about the state of a genre that is widely and officially accepted as the "golden-era". The very success that led itself to its own bastardization by try hard producers who constantly fail in their attempts to reinvent the essence of Trance.
If old trance fails that much in order to be considered watered down I'm pretty sure the "golden era" title would automatically become reclaimed back to its respected position today. However unfortunately for you, your obnoxious tastes in Trance music in comparison to the ratio of historic success of the genre from that point in time, bringing that title back would be about as possible as fisting the end of a needle. Watering something down is a process which follows the chronological order of time (in this case Success moving down towards Failure), not backwards, you fucksocket.

Rougher production qualities. In other words, all you need is advanced up to date ableton/fruityloops/whatever shitty production software filled with clichéd presets to make that modern sounding Trance tune with those mega high quality crisp sounds and reverberated X 50,000 vocals made in an hour like a cheese factory for that next gig unicorn laser gig instead of some good old inspiration. You’re an insult to music in general. Fuck off.

but I can't believe trance got so popular with the classic sound.

It is sad indeed when those clean, innocent rainforests are bulldozed constantly, just like the way technology (abused) and the ever growing hunger for profit fucked the meaning of Trance music. Pull your head out your ignorant, arrogant arse and accept it.

relax man. this guy has already listened to and liked northern exposure. it takes time to develop the trance frame of mind -- getting rid of that impatience and trancing out.

this is from 1993:

this is from '96 (the video's cool too. done in that classic style):

'98:

this one is from 1994 (the above should slow you down enough so that this becomes listenable):

these tracks should at least whet your interest osterzone. youre gonna have to do alot of digging on your own to find more.

The thing about older trance is that back then everyone (or, at least the "big" names) had their own distinct style and sound, people dared to be different... as opposed to everyone trying to sound the same now.

Of course just because something is old doesn't mean it's automatically good - there was plenty of shit being released back then as well.

There is nothing wrong with vocals, if done right. There is PLENTY of old trance with vocals...many of them sounding rather dated (and comical) now but at the time they were popular.

Everybody seems to have a different view of what years constitute the "classic years" and that's pretty natural I guess. But for me it's the years before the conventions of what trance should sound like was etched in effing stone.

Those years IMO are the first years of trance up to late 90s somewhere. There's no exact date when it crossed over of course as it's all shades of gray and sliding scales and whathaveyou but my point is that when the conventions were broad or even non-existent there was amazing breadth in the productions. Creativity thrived. Was it all good. Of course not. Some where absolute crap but I do think the odds of finding something that would become a timeless classic was much higher back then. It also made the whole genre much more interesting to be involved with (as a listener, party goer, DJ, etc).

Who are some of the modern trance producers who still make their stuff with analog synths? The guys I know that make trance are all laptop. Kinda shows my ignorance in this genre.

I think you could really do well in this market if you came out releasing new prog or trance with classic equpiment, the same way that modern deep house dj's try to emulate old house with TR808's and such

I dont know what the equivalent of an 808 would be for a prog or trance producer but I think you get my idea..

Because it's actually trance. Most of what you would call trance isn't actually trance.

I'll use the song that got me into classic trance...

This is sort of an in-betweener song from classic trance and epic/anthem trance. 1:12...that's what separates real trance from bad trance. It's not a hard musical technique...it just drove most trance tracks pre-1995 instead of a big melody. It's called an arpeggio. It was a technique used heavily to add and "entrancing" effect to trance music. Unfortunately, very large numbers of people do not listen to music driven by a single note arpeggio, therefore the music called trance was transformed into this...

Now that's an epic melody there. Add a breakdown, and there you have some anthem trance. It's arpeggiated so i'd call it trance, but you notice how the bassline is limp and changes pitch to augment the melody...the total focus of the song is on the higher pitched melody. The goal was to give the track an "epic" or "uplifting" feeling, but to me it just comes off cheesy.
