Random Joe Uploader won't bother with that, though. |
The whole idea is that these sites should force them to, especially if it's a file format such as MP3. There are countermeasures that come to mind - if the site reads the file-name before uploading it could ban uploads of artists added to a database and verified. So if the filename contains the word Funkagenda it'll be barred.
You might suggest that pirates will simply rename the file to fool the site, but most piracy for these things comes through Google, and if the artist is mis-spelled or disguised, all those searches for "Funkagenda album rapidshare" will draw blanks, thus drastically reducing illegal usage of the website.
None of the sites will do this until they're forced, because it's not in their commercial interests. However, if there's significant legal pressure from the recording industry they may have to. Funkagenda shouting on Twitter may look impotent and whiny, but he has thousands of followers. His Twitter feed is now being copy-pasted onto countless other outlets, such as this thread. A lot of people are going to read about this incident quite quickly. It might prove to be a considerably more effective way of kick-starting action than simply emailing a few people, especially if Funkagenda can't afford the legal fees by himself.

i think it's a bad idea to close these type of sites because they are great for things like mix sharing and track id. these boners better not ruin it for everyone.

Zippyshare is criminal, period.
Im fully behind this Funkagenda guy, hope he can achieve something.
BUT... Illegal downloading won't stop, there will always be new ways. It has to be about a mental change, where people see the value of music again. Now people don't appreciate music, its seen as something that is always just there.
On the other hand, its impossible to buy all music you want. I saw beatport has a single (ONE TRACK) up for 3.65 (wav/exclusive).
I'd like to ask Funkagenda a question... what if somebody buys 3 tracks from you and rips 5 of them from zippyshare. Is he a bad guy, or a good guy? Where's the border?
