I was confused by the title of this thread, and even more confused with the video title in relevance to being a Mormon. It's as if Mormon's aren't allowed to make mistakes lol, no one is perfect in my eyes, It's like recording someone who is a "Catholic" or "Jewish" or "Buddist" or "Muslim" doing some bad thing and therefore use that against them or prove something to the world with that. .. I agree completely, but this isn't some sort of diatribe against Mormons. It's not like if this were some Irish-Catholic doing this, that I'm trying to trash all Irish-Catholics. I suppose they added the tagline for reasons that her Mormon beliefs should come as an illustration to the moral standard she is required to uphold due to her own religion versus her actions.

I genuinely believe that parents should be forced to go to a parenting class before having children. People do not know how to properly discipline their children, and it results in violent, vengeful, angry and messed up kids. Then they pass on the terrible parenting to their kids.

Super Nanny is a great show to illustrate how children should be disciplined. Violence is not necessary at all. Consistency, and clarity is the key to getting good behaviour from children.

If she really wanted to punish him...

anyway, seeing as i have 2 kids.. i can honestly say this is bullshit. I have never laid a hand on my 4 yr old and either has eli.. i don't plan on it in the future either, there are other methods of getting your point across.. shit like this (which i would consider abuse) is pretty pointless. My brother was an EXTREMELY troubled kid. My parents adopted him when he was 2 and had been shuffled around the system 10 times, therefore never connecting to anyone, and never really been nurtured. he has FAS and ADD etc.. he was one crazy ass kid, throwing knifes, starting fires etc. and my parents didn't have to resort to discipline like this, so what excuse does this person have? It breaks my heart kids have to go through stuff like this. maybe it explains some of society's fuck ups.

Discipline that involves pain is the short-answer, quick-fix solution.
You don't need to resort to this type of abuse to teach kids how to behave, and if you are firm enough with kids from an early age, and teach them that there are limits to everything, then you should be ok.

I can't see how the humiliation of what is basically physical abuse is supposed to teach anyone anything..

My parents (especially my mom) beat me until I was in my twenties - I didn't enjoy it, the only thing which beating did to me was allow me to refine my plans to avoid it, and made damn sure that whatever I was doing just before I got hit, I would never be caught doing again.
That didn't stop me from doing it, though.
