I can agree with you there. My post above was meant to work as a hyperbole for the state of the scene in general. There will always be underground ANYTHING, even pop. But when the presence of that type of music in the mainstream becomes infinitely larger than that of the original "underground", it becomes popular culture.

and why do people keep insisting that everybody MUST like trance no matter what ... some types of music just don't appeal to certain peeps. I'll admit I'm just being devil's advocate a little but hey, when I look at some of your posts I really wonder how closed-minded you people are for not acknowledging other types of electronic music.

The whole thing I said about Trance haters being in denial was a JOKE. I thought that was clear with the little " " I put after that statement. And the point of this thread isn't that people MUST like Trance, it's that a lot of people (not all, I made that clear) go out of their way to bash certain types of music because it's "the thing to do" and not because they know their shit about music. It could be any type of music, it's just that recently, the most targeted genre of music has been Trance. This thread is far from a matter of "not acknowledging other types of music". If anything, it's for pro-acknowledgement.

A lot of the people who claim to hate Trance are ignorant to most electronica in the first place -- they simply do it to try to prove that they "know" enough about it to be able to "hate" a certain type. And some people just truly don't like it and don't feel the need to make a big huff about hating it.

As I said earlier, "to each his own", but why go wasting your time bashing other types of music for the sake of bashing something when you can be talking instead, about the music you love? You'll learn more and get a lot more out of it.

i think the hatred towards trance spawns mainly out of this radical style differrence..its like elvis in the 50's, only not as big.. YET. People cant see how music w/o guitars and vocals can be good.. and yet these same ppl honor Bach and Mozart as the greatest composers of all time! Trance is more reminescent of calssical music than anything.

As for the drug link, i think it has to do with left wing mentality once again.. new music + young people = drug use. alwyays has always will. to say its the style of the music that causes it is ridiculus... its like those ppl who say marylin manson was the reason for columbine.

DaNNy

Well I'm definitely not left wing...but at the same time I feel Trance is all inclusive..you don't have to fit a certain mold...yeah some people here bash u for cheesey tunes..but at the same time they're listening to their own cheesey tune..

Secondly...My first trance cd was ibiza euphoria by matt darey..how lucky was i?..my next cd was Slinky and Pure Euphoria 4...these cd'd introduced me to trance and formed many of my opinions..it is true that trance takes many its cues from classical..especially epic or uplifting..essentially classical dance music. It is the highest evolution of the "techno" genre, and its always evolving, just like my taste....

Exclamation Good Thread!

Good Thread Guys...

There are a lot of different reasons why some people "hate" trance. It's not like it's only one reason (the commercial trash). Here where I live (Victoria, BC, Canada), most local trance DJs spin "Progressive" (like Digweed), which in my opinion does not make for the greatest party music. I love listening to Progressive at home and at work, but at parties I need something a little more energetic. So when people go to trance parties here, they end up hearing a lot of "Progressive", which if not structured very well, can easily be very boring. It takes a lot of skill to spin a good "Progressive" set (more so than Epic/Uplifting or Goa/Psy/Acid Trance) in my opinion. So at many trance parties, I often hear others and even myself saying "man, this is boring". So, it's no wonder that many partiers here have a disliking for trance.

But, I also think there are a lot of tranceaddicts who don't always appreciate the other styles of electronica as well. I have been almost strictly a trance-head for about two years now, and I used to absolutely hate hearing Jungle and Breaks at parties. I would usually think "this is too hard to dance to, this isn't good party music"... "What is this crap?". So, you could say I was a Jungle and breaks "hater". I never really even gave it a chance. Whenever I heard it at parties, I would tune out and go socialize or sit down.

It wasn't until I went to a party where there were two rooms: the main room was progressive, techno, house, tek-house, and breaks, and the second room was almmost all Jungle/Drum&Bass. Before the start of the night, I imagined that I would spend all my time in the main room. But as the night wore on, I found the music in the main room to be quite slow and boring. The sound system also wasn't setup very well and was way too bass heavy. You couldn't hear the meat of the music (the melodies) very well at all. So I decided to check out the Jungle room. I had never been able to dance to it in the past, but slowly I started to pick it up dancing fairly slowly to it (like half speed). I really started to enjoy and ended up spending a good portion of my night in there. That was really the turning point for me when I started to appreciate and enjoy Jungle, Breaks and other styles I had not previously enjoyed. In the past few month, I have been exploring almost all styles of electronica also including House, Techno and Hardcore. Lately, I have been getting away from Trance. My current fave stuff is Funky music, like Funky/Disco House and Funky Breaks (aka Florida Breaks)

alright... I better get back to work.

Sal

its good to be well-rounded

funky-disco house is awesome - see tall paul's clubbers guide to 2001.. hatiras, santos, salsoul nugget..
house music as afro medusa says, is a beautiful thing.
actually the origin of trance...
i was listening to this MOS "new brit house" cd by brandon block, mixed in 1998... its defintely house, but has some trance tunes mixed in. chicane's lost you somewhere and armin's blue fear.. when you get into tracks like nalin & kane's open your eyes, they can be quite interchangeable in sets

Wonder how many of these people would hate the trance of today...

(when I read really old threads, especially one's I've participated in, I realize how much stuff I've written (and read) that I've completely forgotten about)

I sometimes wonder if I was first exposed to trance AFTER the current sound became the norm would I still actually like it now if I had never found tranceaddict...

I remember at first I didn't care how cheesy the stuff I listened to sounded, it was this new type of music I had never been exposed before that made me feel different then any other music I had ever heard. Whether it was Ayla, ATB, or some cheesy eurodance music it made no difference. Now I find myself much more judgmental on things like innovation, rehashed ideas and the likes. I don't go out as much for the music or have get as much enjoyment from the music... The PLUR within me is long dead.

Whether that's a good thing I may never know but in all honesty I miss that state of mind.

You know, I'm sick of visiting the MD forum in order to discover that nearly half of the active threads are just dredged up from the archives in some kind of pitiful attention grab-...oh, Swamper did it? Well, that's okay, then.

Maybe not even that many, I think only the commercial trash got worse. And if they started hating trance, they probably never were true tranceaddicts.

Holy shit, I was only like 9 years old when this thread was created. Can you guys believe that? Lol. I didn't even know WTF Trance was at that time.

I see more people listening to the new electro House movement much easier than Trance. Trance in their ears is like too complicated I suppose?
