Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I won't play songs that I don't like. The reason being, is that if I don't like it, I am not going to buy it, and therefore can't spin it. So I avoid situations of people asking requests that suck because I don't have those suck tracks to begin with. I don't believe in selling out to a crowd as a dj. The club hired me because of the demo I gave them, so obviously they think that the music I spin is what they want to hear. If I am a trance dj and someone asks me to play a drum and bass track, even if I have it, I am not going to play it. Remember to be polite to your crowd because ultimately they are the ones that will decide if you are hired again! Trance is a very popular genere, so there will always be people to support you. Bring friends too, that way you can have them start the dancing.
remember djxtension, if you are just starting out and there are other djs, it is vital that you play a WARMUP SET! And even if you are the only dj of the night, you cannot just start rockin' the floor instantly. Usually when I go to a party I check the place out and let the music get me into the groove for the first 30-60mins. I love dancing, especially if I'm the only one because I have the room to do my own thing, and it's cool for spectators too. Most people though, need encouraging. And usually the lights and the dancing don't start happening until the music has been going for 1-2 hours. If a club opens at 9pm, then don't expect dancing to begin until 10:30 or 11pm! You have to warm a crowd up and as I said, it is vital that you play slower tracks in the begining, because when the crowd does want to dance, then you've used up all of your power tracks and you've nothing left to spin that will meet the crowds expectations of the music that you've been playing for the first several hours.
And as for Dj Charlie, you have to realize that the tracks you played, while good, are not really good dancing tracks. I don't know about heaven, but turn the tide is not a very good track for dancing because of the excessive breaks in the beat and all of the vocals. Listen to PVD sets etc. You'll be listening for a long time to hear a break in the beat because he knows that when the beat stops, so does the dancing. Breaks are very powerful, but don't use them overly often! As for using tracks like alice DJ, better off alone is one of her most tracks, but have you ever heard the signum mix? If not check it out because it's much more trancy and it's not played very often at all in the clubs!--at least I've not heard it much at all.
Anyway, remember that if you play all of the tracks that a crowd wants, you may be back to play other gigs for a little while, but if you play great tracks that no one has heard, you have more potential to get a cd of your own! Dj to be yourself, not the top 100 euro chart!

yep, the thing is, the djs who are complaining about the people asking for requests that they don't want to play, obviously are not doing it all for the money. They do care about what they play. I'm sure there is a certain amount of compromise, but as for me, I am upfront with everyone who in charge of hiring me. I give my demo to them and say, this is what I spin. If they don't like it they won't hire me!
