But that's just common sense and should be exercised regardless of where you are.

Richard Coleman says a police officer stole his BlackBerry, then used it to change his Messenger status to 'deceased' and also posted a Facebook status update that read, 'I bite and kick my wife.' (Stephen Puddicombe/CBC)

Been going to Playa for 7 years every years, I have never feel unsafe around Mexican police. I have been stop by them before driving and they definitely do not speak nor write English phrase like: 'I bite and kick my wife.'

Let's be honest, Mexican Police are some of the most corrupt in the world. I've had and heard of altercations over the years that almost always resulted in something sketchy happening and having to pay them off to piss off.

As for this couple, they were obviously smashed and belligerent. They started a scene, number 1, which was clearly avoidable. Then argued with MEXICAN police?! This quote from the MSN Canada article (http://news.ca.msn.com/top-stories/...mentid=27292039) really exposes the kind of person this Coleman is:

"But I believe when dealing with a police officer that is overstepping his authority. I believe it is incumbent on me to point it out to them, even if it means I am going to have to deal with some charges afterwards."

A few things really stick out to me:

1. "Overstepping his authority". You're in Mexico and somehow you think what this officer is doing is 'overstepping' his authority. These are not Toronto Police, they aren't RCMP, they're MEXICAN police officers. Their 'authority' in this particular situation knows no bounds.

2. "I believe it is incumbent on me to point it out to them, even if it means I am going to have to deal with some charges afterwards". I happen to relate to this statement quite a bit. I used to have this outlook on authority back when I sported a Rancid shirt, mohawk and 16-hole doc martens; and it landed me in jail on multiple occasions. Fortunately I NEVER took this attitude to MEXICO with me, or I'm fairly sure I'd be in jail or dead right now.

As for Rutland, I'm sure whatever happened in jail was terrible and sketchy. I feel bad for her having to go through this experience, whatever it might have been. Why she didn't feel it was necessary to report it immediately, I'm not entirely sure. But what is the point now?? You're not gonna go anywhere in Mexico with it, and all you'll get here is your face on the news; which I'm actually very surprised to see as you were a RAPE victim.

But seriously, and again let's be honest people, don't start shit with Mexican police. You are not in Canada. You essentially don't have any rights. You MUST respect authority figures when you're visiting another country, or you're almost guaranteed to have one awful experience... smarten up tards...

just my 2 cents...

i heard that a bunch of people got beaten at the G20 in canada by cops just for expressing their free speech. I also heard that cops in canada arrested hundreds of people, put them in cages and then let them go without charge. I also heard that cops tasered a polish guy in canada right inside the airport and he died. I also heard that cops raided some club in canada and injured people. I also heard that cops in canada kicked some guy in the face unprovoked and that this was caught on film.

If i were you, i wouldnt go to canada.

Well, big difference between Canada and Mexico. Cops in Canada face heavy prosecution for breaking the law. Whether they were found guilty in all these above cases is another issue, but the fact is we all know our rights in Canada, some of us know them very well. If we make a claim we were assaulted or there was wrongdoing by police here in Canada, and your case has strong basis, there is proper and due process. Mexico not so much...

I was assaulted by a bouncer while 3 cops watched; then thrown in jail by another cop for asking for his badge number. I fought this case and with witnesses present at the trial, won.

I'm highly doubtful this case would have had legs in Mexico
