I am definitely far from producing I lack general musical education and don't know how to play synth or keyboard. I know I have the ear for sure for it though. I played local parties for months in lounges and a pretty decent club in Brooklyn although it shut down now. None of these things help me excel in my preferred genre tho as the demographic here isn't interested in trance and that's a shame. I just want to play somewhere and be appreciated - money's not even an issue.

To be honest with you, its going to be very tough to only play trance in NYC when you are just getting started. I ran into this exact problem when I first started DJing. The first gigs I got were in small bars or lounges, or playing very early opening slots. And trance just doesn't really work that well in those kinds of settings. Your average club-goer just doesn't want to hear 138 BPM trance at 10pm or in a lounge. I got discouraged like you seem to be now, that I just didn't have an outlet to play what I wanted. That sort of led me to house music, specifically progressive house, which sort of fuses trance and house together.

I would suggest browsing Beatport for slower, less banging music, and see what, if anything, you like. Try looking in the progressive house sections, even tech house and techno maybe.

Again, I really hated the idea of playing house years ago, and now I have grown to love it. It will just take some time to acquire a taste for it. But once it does, you will see that its a much more versatile genre(especially in NYC) than trance.

even tho i dont really spin anymore,i started 12 yrs ago wit 150 bpm hardcore..lmao im down 2 126-128 tech house/melodic stuff..tech and prog work wonders as far as building a set and like u sed especially in nyc

I agree with all of this. The only thing to watch out for is being completely gung ho on House music. If you want to be a Trance Producer and all you play is house, your fans might look at you confused

desolationAngel, try to find the perfect balance between House and Trance as your peak. But definitely, I'd say start off Housey to get into places.

I've actually been playing house prog house electro house you know real crowdpleaser stuff I'm just honestly tired of it lol aren't there any substantial trance followings in manhattan?

It's been mentioned already, but going out and meeting people and networking is the most important thing you have to do. Also be humble don't be arrogant, being ambitious is good, but be realestic, and have a game plan.

But networking is not all, first you have to be good. Your demo has to show why a promoter should give you a chance. My first demo I made, I worked on it for 3 months straight. By the end I had over 100 different demos, but one really amazing one. I instantly got an opening spot for Jon O'bir, and that hard work, and practice really does help, and continues to help.

Also don't except to go to the big promoters and get a gig, but there are plenty of smaller promoters doing local trance events, go out to those and get to know people. Then you can build up a good following if your good.

And in the way the industry is today, you have to be diverse, don't stick to just trance, but don't lose your core love. You can still play trance, but be open minded, and get into to house, techno, minimal, etc, and learn how to mix it all together. You will be suprised you will find tracks from those genres that fit your style. This can take you a long way to being a much better dj.

If you dont' get a gig right away don't get discourage, just keep looking forward.

Nothing like having all the work done for you...

These are all locally-run trance-themed parties that have gone down in NYC this year so far. What you want to do with this info is up to you. But this is more than enough to get you started. I wouldn't just blindly hit these people up about playing. Think of a pitch, a hook so to speak, that you think would make you a dj worth actually booking.

i know a lot of peolpe who have produced and remixed ect ect many many may top selling tunes and still are where they were 5 years ago. If the "next level" is more gigs ok...but just bcause you have a million gigs doesnt mean youre going anywhere. I have DJs who open got Tiesto one day and until the next Tij set are forced to "donate" their time....

you must network and bring heads...best advice on here.

and as we ALL know (if you love trance) you can very easily throw trance in the mix with house sets.....feel the crowd

How many times has a "house set" turned into almost 100% trance bc it was pushed in to get a clue if it was acceptable and turned out no one cared either way?


Most people who go out for house music wll stay for proggy trance...or even full fledged trance..

I checked the local area info and didnt really find anything - Im gonna hit up Stay on E Houston next monday but got nothing else going on. I really wanna start putting my stuff out there and meeting promoters. Any help appreciated. Thanks guys!
