I've been djing now for around 5 years and late last year my mixing was always right on beat and smooth. Over the past months or so, for the life of me, I just can't get any of my mixes right. I don't think I've changed the way I mix - I just can't seem to do it as well as I used to. Obviously I've done some bad mixes in the past but usually that's followed by better improved mixing.

Lately I've been in a mixing slump and I can't seem to get myself out of it. Things are offbeat and transitions are not as smooth.

Has anyone else been through this during their dj career? How did you improve your mixing? Perhaps it's time for some new headphones or something to change the way I hear the music?

I have 2 x CDJ-800's and a DJM-800 mixer (pinoneer headphones too)

Anyh advise would be awsome.
Thanks.

are you sure youre ears havent been "supertuned" and you now can hear errors where you didnt before? i know i came to a point where i thought i'd start sucking at mixing, but at the same time, all the other dj's transitions decreased in quality as well. i dunno...

have you tried mixing intro's i do this all the time when i am practising techno sets, you mix in your tracks really quickly focusing on getting it as tight as you can in the shortest space of time then grabbing another track and doing exactly the same as soon as youve got it tight enough mix it out quickly and repeat go through about 30 tracks in an hour all roughly the same style and pace helps. as you go through the tracks your ear for sensing whether the beat is on sharpens till it seems you can get the beats matched in seconds once youve got this skill down then start slowing down the speed of your mixes and fine tune.

and remember you can input a load of tracks into a computer and get a perfect mix that not the point of dj,ing

choppy little cuts and filter drops are good at blending when the beats arent perfect and besides when was the last time the average club dj was beat perfect all night just relax and have fun itll come back i guarantee it.

Supertuned?... never really thought of that. I have the Marvo V top ten march mix and the mixing in that isn't exactly perfect... or is that how I hear it?

Want to improve your mixes. Download Mixed In Key. Analyze your library. And concentrate your efforts on picking out songs within that key range. Then, when your spinning the only thing you have to concentrate on is matching a beat and maintaining your levels. Then, you will notice a huge difference.

I'd say 80% of 'Dj's' these days don't have it.

That doesn't mean they haven't got a bar that they've been able to set so far and are just not hitting what they're used to be hitting. (if that makes sense)

I'm still glad that I had an opportunity to get in prior to all these virtual dj's. before the beatmatching became mondane. And carting several crates of records to gigs became too tough. I enjoyed the day where getting a gig meant packing up the car with anything and everything needed, needles, headphones, and in some cases, turntables, and mixers. Now, let's just grab the laptop and head on out. =(

I'd have to agree that I'm glad I've had to go through the hoops, but only for appreciation. I like heading out with my laptop and rocking up with a (somewhat) heavy bag, but it's only 1 bag. When the session goes down afterwards I'm able to join in, unlike before when I'd have to take it easy as I was driving (Cause of all my gear) or head back to the venue the next day to pick it all up.
