Jesus H Christ on a motherfucking bicycle.

I'm not by any means a Gearslut when it comes to the unveiling of some new analogue sysnth, but Dave's sentiments about wood are extremely apt here.

That thing sounds pretty fucking incredible. From what little I could hear of it, there were flavours of old roland synths and machines, as well as vintage moogs and oberheim in there.

The cost is not an issue - I can think of at least two people I work for who will reach for their black amex's without out even blinking an eye (if they actually haven't already).

Why some of you guys can't think beyond that is pretty puzzling and I don't think age is, or should be, an excuse.

The mere fact that some people can only come up with a poor attempt at condescension by referring to someone who admires a quality hardware synthesizer as "analog fanboys" shows a tremendous amount of ignorance. Most intelligent people can appreciate the time, effort, intellect, attention to detail, etc. that goes into creating an instrument like the Schmidt synth. To boil it down to analog fanboyism shows a total lack of ability to think beyond the tired old analog-digital debate or otherwise form any sort of coherent logic.

From a musician's standpoint it just doesn't look practical in any respect, even though it looks like a technical marvel.

To me it sounds really ordinary and old school. Seems like those analog fanboys just love to hear that same old subtractive/modular synth sound in a new shinier, prettier box with MORE BUTTONS! ANALOG POLYPHONY ALWAYS GETS ME HARD!

I totally agree. But, if there's one thing that synth is NOT about, it's practicality. As the designer himself said, (paraphrasing) he built the most incredible synth that he ever wanted. Not really something a bedroom producer would buy or a gigging musician would lug around to smoke-filled bars.

and tweaking knobs with mouse on VST does ?

you can't deny that this synth is a monster (with a monster pricetag)

i don't think its directed at performance though more of a sound design tool

if it was a digital synth (VA) with USB and a computer interface making these sounds i would totally agree with you on every aspect. sadly its a museum object of how things were 40 years ago imo. no wonder its expensive. i believe everything analog is possible to recreate cheaper and more effectively digitally without loosing anything, therefore i find things like this more of a collector/hobby product rather than a instrument for making music. of course its well made and stuff but its like building a fancy fireplace for heating your entire house today - not the smartest decision. some people like gear, others see gear as just tools for greater goal. i just dont get the analog obsession. sometimes analog even sound worse imo.

It looks pretty incredible. It's more the sheer joy of messing with knobs and sliders that gets me, rather then the sound. It's like how most people can't tell a sampled guitar from a real one, but the real one is much more rewarding to play.

Anyways, getting sidetracked. This is probably going to be a mostly collector's item. Well, until Jean Michel Jarre gets his hands of power on them.

Don't like. I only get excited about products that might actually make it to mass production. If he builds 10 in his garden shed, it won't ever have an impact or help anyone other than rich collectors IMO.

I think its sexy but I don't understand how the good mood lasts once you imagine all the other things you can buy for the same price... that imo would be much much better and capable at inducing wood.
